Photographer’s Note
Pe'epe'e Falls, Wailuku River State Park, Hilo, Hawai'i
No, it is not Pee Pee Falls it is pronounced "Pay-a Pay-a" Falls. These falls are just above a spot known as the Boiling Pots a place where cooling lava formed two cauldrons in the river bottom and the water rushes and swirls like a boiling pot of water. It was beginning to rain when I captured this image, hence the distant haze, but what really caught my attention was the African Tulip Tree in the foreground and the falls in the background. I thought this made a very nice image even though there was a cement wall well behind the top of the fall. This fall complex is about 2 miles up the road from Rainbow Falls and the little sister at Rainbow Falls.

Hi John,
I like your vertical frame, we can see the flowers in foreground but also the small waterfall above, a few misty gives a excellent atmosphere to this picture, small but very fine image! Thanks for sharing.
Have a nice day,
John.

Hi John,
Really nice image indeed. The composition is beautiful delicated. We can see the rain arriving, but the light on the tree and flowers are very nice and make them stand out on the scene. The mouvement of the falls were well capture and add to the picture.
Cheers,
Flavia

An unusual composition where the waterfalls are taking second place to the beautiful tree. With all this close foliage you were fortunate that there was no wind to blur it while allowing you to use a suitable shutter speed for the falls. It's a pity you couldn't hack out the concrete or blow it up as it does draw the eye somewhat, but I think you dealt with it in the right way by leaving space above it for some background trees. You certainly got plenty of practice with waterfalls on this trip.

Very interesting, John. Your note just covered all my questions and observations exactly in the sequence as I was looking at this photography. First, how the heck do I pronounce this name. Second, the formation of the place. Third, the haziness due to incoming rain. Fourth, the wonderful colors that compensate the hazines and the cement wall in the background. And finally, were is it exactly.
Thanks for clarifying all these issues so well and presenting another wonderful hawaiian waterfall.

Hi John,
This is the best view I've seen of these falls framed as they are by the tulip trees. Just fabulous!!
