The Hawai'i Island is home to 3 of the 4 active volcanoes in the Hawai'ian islands. It isn't surprising then that the Hawai'i Island is home to the Volcanoes National Park. The Kilauea started eruption in 1993 and has been continously spewing lava since then. Along with the lava, the vent also spews a lot of sulphur fumes. The haze in this sunset shot is created by the sulphur fumes.
Unfortunately I could not get a good shot of the lava entering the ocean. This was a spectacular sight. As I was travelling with family, I chose not to do the 2-mile trek across the lava fields to be able to get a good shot. This sunset was a consolation. |
