Driving along the Pilani Highway in southeast Maui, the storm clouds hung over the south end of Haleakala Crater, a dormant volcano standing 10,023 feet above sea level.
The great thing about driving in this area of Maui is that most people DON'T. It's perhaps the least touristy place on the island, mostly because all the rental car maps tell you explicitly NOT to drive there. But my wife and I did anyway and we were rewarded with some of the most beautiful scenery and ocean views in all of Maui -- views that 99 percent of the tourists never see. However, we were joined by one other set of tourists, as you can see by the Jeep driving down the gravel road. At times, when the roads got really bad (they're mostly unpaved and some of the twists and turns hug the mountains with only a few feet between the mountainside and the plunging cliffs to the other side), it was nice to have the company ahead of us.
I liked the feeling of driving through such beautiful countryside with the massive Pacific Ocean out to our left and the domineering Haleakala Crater range to our right and seeing the clouds opening up for the sun. |

What a beautiful scenery! Amazing light, good colors, and I very much like the car; it gives the picture a story, instead of just being a landscape shot. Well done.
