[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
My last shot of the Sand Dunes which concentrates more on the
Medano Creek. As you can see the ice which has formed overnight may give people second thoughts about crossing over to the Dunes and believe me when I crossed over to the Dunes that morning I didn't want to walk back again. I thought I had caught frostbite on my toes.
It was well worth it though.

Here is some info on Medano Creek from the NPS.
Medano Creek flows on the surface of the sand in spring and early summer because of the aquifer which supports it is "perched" atop a mostly impermeable layer of "hardpan" of caliche (calcium carbonate). During the winter the perched aquifer shrinks and surface flow disappears until spring snowmelt refills the perched aquifer and Medano Creek begins to flow on the surface again, usually in April or May.

Hi Jim,
A wonderful composition with good sharpness and DOF. The colours are fantastic. Certainly worth the risk of frostbite to cross the icy stream. You did the right thing to focus on the stream and less of the sky.

A very nice composition, with excellent colors. I did not pay attenton to the ice untill reading you note, but the coldness probably explains the very bright blues since Winter sometines gives a very clear atmosphere and thus very bright colors.

All the best,

Emmanuel

many thanks for the sharing

Theres not a lot to engage the eye in terms of a focal point here but I do think it is very well structured and composed with naturally saturated colours. Nice work.
