The Chamber of Commerce gives away a whole bunch of useful information like „Mountain Illness + Acclimatization“ but you can also pick a nice booklet on „Colorado’s Scenic and Historic Byways“ – offering a handful of tips and ideas you may not find in your travel guides. When I saw No. 4 “Unaweep/Tabeguache” in this booklet I knew this was the one for us. It says things like […] the ageless desert region offers sheer scenic wonder – striated cliffs towering a thousand feet overhead, raging streams, and boundless skies […]
Also taken from this booklet:
Lengths: 133 miles
Driving time: 3 hours
Special considerations: Bring full tank of gas, food, and water, long intervals between service stops
No. 4 starts in Whitewater (near Grand Junction) ending in Placerville (or the other way around of course).
I don’t know how you handle long driving. We were listening to some really good music and if I think about it, I still have to laugh, and I really wonder how it looked seeing the two Swiss sitting in the car really being into their music … must have looked like a session of Muppet Show :)
This picture is another one of “these” photo stops … well I know you might have found out yourself :)

Glad you are on the ground again instead of that plane ;-)
I know see a better tlandscape than from above and see points of interest which are familiar to me. Long time ago i was in Grand Junction, not a town that remains in my thoughts as a nice one, but just outside the town you see a wonderful landscape, exactly what you show us here.
Deep intense colours, that's how i like to see them. You did very well on this one with the green, red an blue colours...wonderful contrast to each other.

Barabara, I'm so impressed this shot that I have a spelling problem with your name. Sorry! It isn't just the POV, the composition, the light, etc, but also your PP that gives the right sense of presentation. I can't believe that you were withholding these gem for so long in your harddrive.
I love the shot!

Hallo Barbara. Was für ein grandioses Motiv. Ein erhabener Augenblick, wenn man diese Landschaft vor sich hat. Absolut sehenswert und technisch perfekt. Meine Anerkennung. Viele Grüße, Wolfgang.

this is a picture I would love to see printed on a huge poster, so much detail is in it. Great!

einfach wundervoll, diese Schärfe und Klarheit, und dieser makellose Himmel.

Hi Barbara (or Miss Piggy ;-)
The light and colours are stunning. The wall is nicely contrasted especially with that mix of brown and green. The odd colour of the water is attractive and I really like your sky.

un très joli ciel qui contraste bien avec ce superbe paysage. Les couleurs rendent bien et la profondeur est appréciable. Bravo.

Was für eine eindrucksvolle Landschaft - und insbesondere, was für eine Farbenpracht! Ein tolles Foto mit einer wunderscönen Tiefe. Der Aufnahmestandpunkt könnte kaum besser sein.
Grüße aus dem leicht verschneiten Westfalen!

Marvellous shot of a marvellous location, Barbara!
One can literally lose himself in this awesome display of colors.
Glad you were driving, this time!
You have a great evening.

Woderful contrasting colors seen in this wild natural landscape. The winding river creates a nice sence of depth while the deep blue sky highlights the the arid landscape with little scrub pines clinging to the red sandstone cliffs. Very clear colors and excellent sharpness to this fine western landscape.
pasternak (15173) 2007-11-14 1:58
This is a fantastic landscape shot, Barbara, the grandiose canyon is presented in good light and the POV allows to build up a comprehensive composition. Maybe it is just an impression, but the shot seems to fall to the right...
Standa (1877) 2007-11-15 9:31
I see you had nice time and funny driving.
Fantastic landscape and captured very professional. I like especialy DOF and POV.

LOL I have to laugh reading the comments before me, how comes YOU Barbara have shot a photo from the ground ??? Even without the eagle pov the view is breathtaking and deep, and the cliffs offer an attractive mix of green and warm hues. I find the sky color a bit strange, pola effect maybe ?
I wish you a nice week end,
stamatis (2442) 2007-11-16 6:45
lovely composition with beautifoul colours and a great sky
best regards Stamatis

Hello Barbara! An instant Southwest classic, your image captures and documents the enormous power and beauty of erosion in the Canyon Lands. Nice placement of the river on the left, colors are spectacular and details very sharp. And of course, your note brings the usual smile to my face :)
jaywalker (16095) 2007-11-18 15:23
Hi Barbara, A spectacular view, you have captured it brilliantly, the shades of green are superb & the depth is excellent, you have composed the shot very well, looking down the river was a great choice for your POV, TFS, kind regards Wilson.

Hello Barbara -
It can be a challenge to while away the hours on some of the long drives in the western USA. Radio can be pretty sparse so you must bring your own tunes with you. "Swiss looking like Muppets..." I don't know we all kind of look like that when "bopping to the oldies." This is a very nice image that demonstrates the vastness and majesty of Colorado's Western Slope. This image has strong colors, excellent contrast, and you have managed the harsh light very well. Well seen and accomplished.
Thank you for sharing.

So pleasant colors and very good perspective with river.

The hight point of view is very impressive.

de jolies lignes colorées, un beau ciel bleu parsemé de petits nuages. Beau paysage !
Flavia (10352) 2007-11-30 18:29
Ecellent shot with strong composition and great colors and textures. The composition of this one works better for me tham the next one, as you have a clear lead here. The green river on the 1/3 works perfectly. You had a beautiful day to explore the place, the blue sky is quite amazing.
Jonas_Schmitt (3074) 2007-12-01 4:30
Nice landscape picture with great colors making a beautiful contrast to each other and excellent depth.I like your point of view and the sharpness/depth of field here very much!
cbrman (21637) 2007-12-06 3:33
La vue et la perspective sont tout simplement spendides !
Les couleurs que tu as saisi ici sont très naturelles et agréablement saturées !
Je trouve que les strates de pierre que l'on peut voir dans cette très belle photographie sont l'élément captivant de l'image !
Mistral (15402) 2007-12-20 11:35
love the vivid light that you share in your image and the beauty of the wild.
The colours are great as well your composition and note.
Angshu (53982) 2007-12-30 21:39
Not a view we see often & that too when your feet were firmly on the ground :-). The high POV is of course the clincher with the narrow river winding it's way thru the canyon, green shrubbery on one side & brown stacks of rocks on the other. Excellent contrast with the blue sky. I wanted to comment on your winter shots, but being a warm climate man, I couldn't resist. I'll visit soon...in case I can't in the next couple of days, I wish you both a very happy new year.
knowdebu (964) 2008-01-05 22:48
stunning landscape.the river looks too good through the rocky mountains.
zmey (7335) 2008-01-29 6:06
it seems you have frequented one of my most coveted places too... the american west. the land of the mavericks. the land of the wonders... :)
lovely, lovely shot. and the sight... the play of lively green agains the soothing blue of the sky. and the detail. i confess, i love it! :)
cheers and TFS
scobert (5355) 2008-02-12 18:27
You can listen to your music and look like the muppets all you want to. I am just glad that you went out of your way to see our Colorado scenery. I don't get to the Grand Junction area as much as I used to. Your photos are giving me the itch to travel here early this summer. You went at a good time for late July and August would be unbearable here. The temperatures would be above 100 degrees F. I like the way that you take the backroads and avoid the crowds. This is a great shot with beautiful colors and very sharp rendering of millions of years of geological strata. Superb!
InasiaJones (30738) 2008-02-27 1:29
Fascinating rocky landscape, with vivid colours and sharp details.
I like the way you've built your composition, with river off-centred and high summit to close the frame. The light is particularly remarkable and adds a lot of crisp contrasts.
Burberry1 (6041) 2008-02-27 1:30
A very powerful shot!
The POV, tones, exposure are perfect here.
I especially love the perspective and the fantastic effect!
MarcT (20958) 2008-03-07 9:35
That's a beautiful scenery with a great sky and very special green tones, especially in the water. It must be an incredible place if one is lucky enough to visit it.
steliosk (4802) 2008-03-21 9:16
I don't know how you do it, but this colour is great. I'm saying it first because its quite rare to see such colour quality.
The POV is close to perfect. (I'm saying this because I can imagine a panoramic scene how it would look like).
The smoothness and quality is an obsession where I admire you for it!
avene (12675) 2008-03-30 15:47
hello Barbara :)
I really miss green valleys and warm sun right now, so this photo is like a balm for my soul :)) love the green river winding into the mountains and the clouds so close I could hang my bag with the heavy camera on them :) and as if that was not enough for a great photo, you throw in beautifully layered and perfectly exposed rocks. superb photo, I like it a lot.
with kind regards,
banyanman (7789) 2008-03-31 8:42
Hi Barbara. This is the sort of landscape that both photographers and geologists dream about. Superb colours, excellent composition and POV, which captures well the scenic wonder of this place. You've pushed the sharpening to the limit, and that has brought out the detail in the rocks very well. Cheers . . . David
mirarer (4751) 2008-09-03 9:16
Good perspective and great light and colors for a beautiful landscape.
feather (51130) 2009-02-01 6:45
We didn't get to this area. Colorado was all too brief a visit. Excellent colours in this one with the greens and reds combining so well and all under a blue sky. Your POV (from a bridge??) was a good one for showing the murky river. Well done
