the Dallas Divide is a high mountain pass in the southwestern corner of Colorado. The pass is a broad valley saddle between the San Juan Mountains to the south and the Uncompaghre Plateau to the north. The highest peak is at 8,983 ft. elevation and provides spectacular vistas for the towns of Ridgeway and Telluride. This photo was taken along the Highway 62 which is a scenic byway. Mount Sneffels can be seen on the right.
A toll road was constructed in the 1880's over the Dallas Divide linking the town of Dallas near Ridgeway to Telluride. This is called the Rio Grande Southern Railroad right of way and a few old cars can be seen at the entrance to the town of Ridgeway. I meant to take a few photos of the old cars but didn't have the time. This spot was just a flag stop along the route and the railroad called it 'The Peake'. the name being called after a dispatcher, F.W. Peake, who worked for the railroad.
There were two sidings, with a 52 car total capacity and 4 structures. It is a very steep grade up through those mountains. This is at RGS mile post 13.3.
There were so many photographers that morning all lined up against the fence.

nice to know that photographers come here early in the morning to catch the best light, must be a fantastic place for a photo shoot.
you have a lovely photo yourself.
love seeing the horizontal lines, the autumn colors almost in full bloom, and the white mountains near the top.

This is the moment when landscape shows off its autumn splendour with burst of stunning colors. It's almost perfect and I'd hang that on my wall with great pride and I think you could not ask for anything better. You have captured the scene so beautifully when nature lavishes its best on you. We just need to get out of our comfort zone and surrender to god's creation. Top notch, My compliments.

Really nice view of the forest in late September with snowy mountains in the background. No wonder you mention many photographers trying to catch this beauty in the morning. Your photographer's note is also very useful. Now I see that there are many fine landscapes available around the world, but, perhaps we will be able to witness them only on photos. That is also great. Thanks.

Excellent panoramic view of the Dallas Divide with the yellow/green autumn colored forest contrasting with the snow covered Rockies.
On a side note, our railroad companies were important transporters of visitors to The West, especially the National Parks. Many of the rail companies are long gone, victims of the huge popularity of autos after WWII.
