Another view from the backseat of a Cessna window when Benno did time with an instructor doing procedures and giving me time for a closer look to the runway below us. Training never hurts but it might hit a deeper leak into your budget :) and this is how it comes that I shower in a half-clean toilet at the nearest campground available where a group of tourists talks the whole night sharing experiences about the cheapest way to get from A to B. But: Aren’t exactly these experiences the least you forget? They are priceless in my eyes, and for a view like this one I am more than happy to sleep on the floor. The girls at Colorado Flight Centre had mercy for me and one couple invited us to stay at their land next time we come over and that I can shower at their home or stay in their guest room (thanks Marisa …). On the other hand I don’t mind campgrounds, they let you take part how people spend their free time and you meet fantastic people but you also get strange looks especially when we were washing our tent that was full of sand from staying in some of the Utah Parks, this is when worlds collide and you have certainly a shy audience not really sure if they should call for help ... they might wash their cars but never their tents :)
Anyway, they did their circles over Mack Mesa Airfield (we never landed there) and one procedure was that Benno had to close his eyes and the instructor was bringing the aircraft into a strange position, when done he shouted “your plane” and Benno had to recover the thing bringing it back straight. After doing that a couple of times he was beginning to feel funny in his stomach and for the rest of the afternoon he walked around with a bottle of coke and my idea of eating Mexican was certainly not the best suggestion … I earned THESE looks :)

Ah Baba flying again I was missing such views, gooood to see them again and blind me I did not notice earlier that upgrade, so my belated congratulations for shooting now with this fine camera, a yellow one but certainly able to get you some nice photos, and we shall no forget the camera makes only a small part of the shot. Here we see your eye has seen and prepared the compo with the air strip on the diagonal but now tell me smart lady what this big 7 means ??? Do they have that many air strips in Mack ?

Superb compo, and great use of the airfield, into the diagonal.
Great note too :o)

I can imagine that place being so off the beaten track that inhabitants use plane to go shopping. Desert landscape emphasize minimalism on this. Maybe you could have framed this so that the runway is directed more exactly from corner to corner. I always like to read your stories along the pictures.

You're certainly coming up with some unique visions of the west! I guess that's the advantage of having a plane - no chance that we've all seen this one a million times before - and all credit to you for taking this approach. Maybe "credit" is a sore point, however!! I'm thinking of your budget! ;)

I like the idea of calling a straight line "doing circles". Quite strange and unusual isn't it ? Except that, I appreciate the visual impact you get with minimalist compo...

Again you offer us a unique perspective with your trademark sharp detail. Very nice. I also like your note a lot; it is amazing how helpful strangers can be.

avene (12675) 2008-08-19 8:14
oh my God, Barbara, you should write short stories :))) I had a serious laughter attact while reading your note, especially the part about calling for help (I assume - from the nearest mental hospital) when you see people washing their tent... love the story and the matter-of-factly way to describe it :))
love the photo too, the overwhelming diagonal with the huge letters create an absolutely surreal feeling, like a paiting by some aliens. the green patch in the upper right corner adds a great colour accent to the otherwise muted earth-tones. really great shot, my compliments.
with best regards,
p.s. congratulations on the D300! I know it's in able hands ;)

Was fuer ein Talent.

LOL - what a funny note, Barbara (eating Mexican)! But
you're right - sometimes when our pockets are not deep, we
need to make sarifices... some are born not to mind and
some will never change that for the comfort of a hotel room.
This is an interesting shot of a runway in a sense that
you made a diagonal across the vertical format. Also,
interesting to see that nothing grows around (or very
little), but I suppose it's because of the lack of rain
in this area and high temperatures...?
kensimage (8565) 2008-08-22 18:21
Hi Barbara--Maybe it's not your most creative photo, but it's sharp and clear with that strong diagonal, and it conveys just how small a runway really is when seen from the plane that has to land on it! Regards, Ken.

Superlative...almost like we seee in one of the simulated games. The perspective and pov are fantastic and I dont think it will be easy for someone to do something like this

Hi barbara this is a very fine post from a high place^^
great contrast and nice quality.
I really like this shot
gunbud (34066) 2008-08-25 11:45
Wonderful clairty and fine details seen from your heavenly POV.
Wonderful contrast between the finely textured arid foreground and the little patch of lush green at the end of the landing strip.
jvachon (548) 2008-08-26 14:25
Quite the POV you have from your lofty perch.
The compo is great with the runway coming into the diagonal.
Take care, Joni

I do love flying and taking pictures from the sky! When landing, the plane is less fast the pictures from cities, airports etc. are easier to get and I think they're so interesting!
That's why this one attracted me from the very thumbnail and I just think it's a really nice picture! The diagonal position of the runway is perfect to compose the scene!
TFS - Congratulations!

the view and clarity are simply stunning, this is the kind of image we don't get to see too often, that's for sure!
A wonderful diagonal to catch the eye and that patch of green in top right to provide great contrast with the harsh environment : that's all you need, perfect!
Some things are priceless, in that respect I'm just the same : I can eat tuna-fish sandwiches for weeks in a row if that allows me to save money to do the couple things I love.
Have a wonderful weekend, see ya soon.

Belle diagonale.
Wandering_Dan (3449) 2008-08-31 9:15
Hi, Barbara -
Very nice minimalist shot. And hard to get, even with a private pilot who's willing to do things for you. I like the way you use the runway as a full diagonal pointing the eye right to the one patch of color in the whole image.
Angshu (56750) 2008-09-09 0:38
Lovely placement of the strip in a diagonal. Contrsts well with the earth tones which surround the strip with the exception of the green patch of cultivated field at the top corner. What can I say about your note!? Very few in this site can write as well, as lucidly & with such humour as you do...keep it up my frined..your pictures & notes do light up my day!
Jonas_Schmitt (3074) 2008-09-28 6:47
Toll !
