River Rushing Down a Dark Green Mountain
North Fork of the St. Vrain River
Wild Basin Area
Rocky Mountain National Park
The Wild Basin area is one of the best kept secrets of Rocky Mountain National Park .. the entrance by road is separated from the rest of the park down old Highway 7.
After entering the area one travels down a long single lane dirt road that ends in a large parking area (in summer or on weekends arrive early .. I have had up to a mile added to my walk when the lots are full ... so I guess it is not so secret)
... the trail at the end of the parking lot travels along this wild rushing river through a thick and dark forest .. passing by Copeland Falls, Calypso Cascades, and Ouzel Falls .. three of the stunning water features of Rocky Mountain National Park ..
If you were checking through my gallery last July you might remember the story of this day .. I was solo hiking this area .. the trail was busy so I felt pretty comfortable .. I was coming back down from Calypso Cascades .. slowly .. stopping along the river for shots like this .. Shortly after this shot I waited out a rain and ate my lunch (just a third of a mile from the trail head) .. the rain had emptied the trail .. as I was walking through the last thick stand of forest I rounded a corner and on the trail ahead of me was a very large bear (seemed very large to me at that moment anyway) .. I looked at him .. he looked at me .. I took a step back (stupid probably) .. and he raced off into the woods ..

Interesting effect on the slow shutter. The water look so soft and light that it might float up. Very good lighting with perfect exposure on the rocks and sky with good detail in the shadows.
Have a good Sunday. Regards. Latiff.

I really just discovered your gallery today when two of your images appeared as a feature on South Dakota on the TE front page. I paid a visit to your gallery and was some impressed with many images. I really like the sharpness and clarity of this image, and the well saturated colors are stunning. I will be watching for more of your posts. Great work and TFS. Gerald

marknunnerley (2780) 2008-03-16 5:39
you can almost feel the water rushing by. I was told 2 seconds was too long an exposure of rushing water but I feel thats a personal thing. Very good.
AROBN54 (11471) 2008-03-16 8:09
really wonderful POV here and you did a great job with that slow shutter speed. The light and contrast is excellent and you got beautiful detail in the foliage along the river. Really pretty shot! Thanks and hope all is well!

I think that you nature shots are best here...
delic (6735) 2008-03-16 15:45
The smooth flow of water is always nice. What I like most here is the composition that allows for effective contrast with the dark green of the trees. Outstanding capture, John. Best,
gunbud (34066) 2008-03-16 20:01
You choose a beautiful low angle to catch this cascading river that is wonderfully framed by the lush evergreen that grace its turbluent banks. Great details and sharpness to this beautifully exposed shot.
robertosalguero (246) 2008-03-16 23:35
The view is beautiful with the silky water taking center stage in the frame. The light was excellent to compose the image. Good colour saturation and sharpness. The white water definitely add a nice touch of life to this natural landscape. Thanks John.
bakes888 (18499) 2008-03-17 1:30
Hi John. Smooth flowing water and blue sky, nice contrast. Well composed, the river naturally leads the eye into the scene and provides good FG interest also. Nice work and thanks for sharing.
PS Is 8 months long enough to get over a wild bear encounter ;-).
evanrizo (456) 2008-03-17 4:19
the longer exposure makes it fantastic with this motion effect on the water, all the image is very good illuminated too.
stego (23138) 2008-03-17 5:24
You are a real master with these cascades. Perfect compo, clarity and colours, it's a stunning photo.
I am sorry that the bear run away before you had the chance to photograph him, but I wonder if that wouldn't be dangerous. Maybe you were lucky, after all.
izmirli (3987) 2008-03-17 6:23
merhaba dear john

dip (23528) 2008-03-17 9:19
well captured and composed with good POV and perspective,
I like also the depth of field and the beautiful colors
pboehringer (770) 2008-03-17 12:53
a quite characteristic shot for your galery. I'm a little bit surprised to see that you used a ND grad filter. Actually I would have expected a ... never mind I just looked back to your technical data and saw that it isn't a ND grad but just a ND. Now that makes sense and the 2s made all the trick.
adores (34738) 2008-03-17 19:47
Nice pov to show the river! The exposure creates also a very nice effect on the water.I like it!
Good colours also!
markstaples (15670) 2008-03-18 10:31
I always love to see the effect of a long exposure on running water. It produces the most wonderful image. Nice lighting in this shot too.
jemaflor (81460) 2008-03-19 4:47
very well captured, great result fot the water, nice landscape with a good depth for your photo.
asajernigan (20642) 2008-03-19 5:44
This is a beautiful shot! The long exposure worked perfectly for you here giving the water a silky appearance with a sense of power. The surrounding foliage is crisp and sharp and frames the river nicely. Your composition and POV are great as is the lighting and color.
fulvio52 (8314) 2008-03-19 8:22
Brilliant exposure, John!
That slow shutter works perfectly well for me.
Great dynamics, stunning color and overall definition. Silky and dreamy, just as I like it!
Karmenu (1408) 2008-03-21 5:13

I like your note too...
Didi (55145) 2008-03-21 11:08
Very nice composition with the steamy rushing falls.
Very good and deep foreground.
I appreciate well your work.
branley (3681) 2008-03-23 4:13
for me the 2 second exposure is too much but that is only my personal opinion but...the way you've composed the shot, the sharpness (especially in the foreground) and the light & colour makes it a very special capture. People have said that landscapes are boring (my own son included) but they obviously don't see what we see....you can't beat mother nature. It's a really fine photograph and your usual fine note too.
A very happy Easter Sunday to you and your family John,
jaywalker (16095) 2008-03-24 6:11
Hi John, I always look at your photos in awe & think how lucky you are to live in such a beautiful place in our world, I live near the English lakes & get so little time to see this natural beauty, so looking through your site helps me realize that nature is surviving in some parts of this planet, on this photo you have slowed the water brilliantly, a lovely silky effect, the overall composition is wonderful with the large rocks in the foreground &, the view through the trees, the colours are so natural, I thank you for such a great shot, kind regards Wilson.
lorenzetti (1584) 2008-04-19 10:06
I like the effect of the long exposure time on the water. The rocks in the foreground give a good depth.
Best regards - Franco

John? Likeable person and a good photographer
king (2905) 2008-05-23 20:36
Beautiful picture is this. I like the exposure time you chosed and its effect on the streaming water. Low pov gives a nice composition.
paura (47166) 2008-05-25 6:38
Amazing view here, John. The composition is great and the watter surface visual effect by your 2 seconds exposure results very interesting.
Congratulations for the http://mclaird.org/onautism.html also. Is really a very interesting place.
zeca (19762) 2008-05-25 19:49
Hello John, my friend!
This is a nice river! The exposition is very good, creating the surreal effect of milk, or silk. Your POV is also nice, with the view of the curve creating nice depth. Colours, sharpness, everything is nice. This is a kind of place I would like to walk by.
Hope that everything is fine with you and yours!
danos (83633) 2008-06-01 4:40

Hello lucky man! The bears love you!
The image is very, very good! Water's effect is amazing thanks to the shutter's speed and the aperture. Lovely colors and a great viewpoint, too!
