[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The mining town of Bodie, in the California section of the Great Basin (east of the Sierras), was, in its heyday, known as one of the most lawless places in a lawless time. A little girl, whose parents moved there, wrote in her diary, "Good bye, God, I'm going to Bodie." Supposedly, the editor of the local paper heard about it and turned it into: "Good! By God, I'm going to Bodie!"

After the gold ran out, so did the miners, and the town gradually decayed into ruin. Now it is a state park, and people who make the trip (it is a LONG way from anywhere) can get interesting photographs. Like this one.

(Although I took this in my pre-digital days, I know exactly when I took it, as Itzhak Rabin was assassinated that day, and the news was the only thing on the radio. Not the sort of thing one forgets.)

Technical: Slide, scanned by ScanCafe. Some slight cropping and Curves. I played around it a couple of times, the last instance being that I lowered the contrast slightly.

Hi Daniel,
I have seen similar shots from Peter too. This looks really cool and thanks a lot for your note too. Even the scan couldn't take away the quality. Really good work.
Well done,
Shaeri

I've seen pictures of this place before and was really impressed! Very interesting! I love the detail and colors in this picture! TFS

Hi Dan,
How funny, it just am working on a Bodie picture which i made ready for uplaod the coming days. For me Bodie is the most beautiful ghost town i have ever seen, and when i ever return to California i will visit it again. It's a walhalla for photographers.
It's film, the famous Kodachrome, so i don't want to judge to much on the techchnical side, only that i think you used to much gran reduction. It looks bold without life in it, that looks a bit wierd, but 2 points for Bodie, for that fantastic place..!!!
Regards, Henk

hello daniel

the place is a legend: one of my destinations to see. as hend noted, the technical side should not judged too harshly since it's a scan from an old slide. it does look a bit 'flat' in the present presentation though. otherwise, the original light and your compo looks great.

warm regards,
kristaps

Excellent POV. I had the pleasure of visiting here last year and could spend a week in this place. I remember the leaning outhouse.
Nicely done but I fear the scan has not done your original slide justice.

Right on, Dan!
BODIE, the one and only, one of the best places for photographers out West! I'll be back up here in the Summer of 2009...
It's a 1995 shot, I look at it with 1995 eyes, and I more than like what I see. Strong colors and Kodachrome textures, a fine diagonal that prompts one's imagination to guess what's beyond the frame limitations, and a suggestive display of Bodie's unique magic. More than enough! Thanks for sharing, buddy.
You have a wonderful day, see ya soon.
Ciao,
Fulvio.

Hello Daniel,
Much appreciated for your effort to have this old miner town well captured and sharing with us!
great pov with that warm colouration and details of the place also many thanks for the notes
best regards
tony

Dan,
to get to Bodie you really need to have the will. It is a long drive ... but once you're there it pays off a thousand times. I was there last year for the first time during our first Californian TE meeting and I know that this wasn't the last time!
Your composition is a real deja-vu. I got the very same shot. I probably even saw the marks of your tripod there and used it for my own photograph. Maybe i should go nback and do some digging in my hard drive and get something into life and ready to post. The problem is that I don't enough time for TE and to many other recent shots that I want to post before.
Peter
