Photographer’s Note
One of the submarines on the Nemo ride! It just re-opened earlier this year. Complete with colorful reefs (which is good because from what I understand there may not be any real ones anywhere in the world in about 20 years because of climate change and the shape of the world's oceans), ancient ruins and an erupting underwater volcano, the ride features characters from the film, such as Dory, Bruce the Great White, Gil, Peach, Crush the sea turtle and much more. The first ride opened in June, 1959, based on the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea movie. It replaced a Phantom Boat Ride which consisted of gasoline-powered boats that often stalled, stranding guests in the middle of the artificial lagoon. These move along a track that goes along a certain route. The original eight were gray and were named for the US Navy's first nuclear submarines: The Nautilus, the Seawolf, Skate, Triton, Ethan Allan, Patrick Henry, Skipjack and the George Washington. They seat 38 guests and travel at a whole 1.7 mph. In 1980 they were painted yellow, but the ride was closed in 1998 and many of the underwater props were sold at auction. The ride was completely reworked and opened earlier this year.
