Photographer’s Note

This Lake Tahoe view is from the south side of Highway 89. The north side reveals Emerald Bay. The snow field in the mid ground is the Taylor Creek drainage, which is a good area to cross country ski. The mountain in the upper left corner is the Heavenly Ski lifts and the upper right corner is El Dorado County's highest mountain, Freel Peak at 10,886 feet.

The Washoe Native Americans lived in the Tahoe Basin probably since 7,000 B.C. Washoe means literally "People from Here". The People from Here lived around the lake in the summertime, fishing, hunting and gathering plant edibles. In the winter they lived in lower, warmer valleys.

Their name for Lake Tahoe is "Da ow ga" meaning simply "lake". Whitemen interpeted the word as "Tahoe". The People from Here name for the Pacific Ocean is also basic, "Da Ow Ga Shemu", meaning "real lake".
