A quaint hotel in Sausalito, CA, just minutes from San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. It features 16 rooms and suites with custom-designed furnishings, hand-crafted by local artisans. The architecture is sometimes described as "French Riviera" style, but it looks more Californian to me! I think it's more Mission-Revival. It was built in 1915 and was reputed to have been a brothel. During Prohibition in the 1930s, liquor from trucks found its way into the hotel parlor! George aka Baby Face Nelson was rumored to be a regular guest. Because of its proximity to the waterfront (a dock is literally just right around the corner) it was a haven for railroad workers, seafarers, writers, and gangsters. During the 1960s, writers such as Sterling Hayden took up residence, along with other artists and thinkers seeking a more free-thinking environment. It's often served as a setting for movies. It was extensively renovated in 1996, but has since re-opened. The views are exquisite as it sits just on the other side of the bay from San Francisco, offering stunning panoramic views.
