Today the temperature in San Anselmo was 102 degrees Fahrenheit or about 39 degrees Celsius. I recall fondly the days not so long ago when fog entered the Golden Gate to fill San Francisco Bay and provide nature's air conditioning that we so appreciate in this region. So it seemed natural to make this return from my brief sabbatical with this image taken high on the Marin Headlands peering across the Golden Gate bridge shrouded in fog toward the skyline of San Francisco and the distant East Bay hills. The wind was whipping, sending a chill through me as I braced myself to take this photo. Today, I must rely on the large window fan to cool me off as I ready myself for bed, but it is nice to recall that brisk day above the Bay with San Francisco in the distance. Hope you enjoy it as well.
It is nice to be back at TrekEarth. I look forward to crossing paths once again with the many folks whose presence makes this corner of cyberspace such a lovely place to hang out.

Nice capture, I like how the bridge stands out but still disappears inside the fog, and the skyscrapers peeking out in the distance. The horizon seems to be a bit tilted.
avis2avis (4264) 2004-09-07 1:46
Wow this is awesome!!! ou shot this from a great vantage point. We can see half the bridge and the approaching all engulfing fog very well. It must be difficult for motorists crossing the bridge to see through all that fog! Nice to have you back on TE Curtis and that too with such a lovely pic to share.
Rhiannon (1728) 2004-09-07 2:14
Wow! I have never seen anything like this before. A totally new view of the famous bridge for me.
Very dramatic and beautiful. I like your composition and the way we can see the clear San Fransisco skyline above the fog.
I really hope I get to see San Fransisco some day. I have heard from many people it is the best and most beautiful and nice city in the US.
Michael_Gan (2776) 2004-09-07 2:49
Wow Curtis, this is a great picture. Seeing photos with clouds like these, I always want to see what’s underneath the fog. But then again, if I see what’s hidden by the fog, it wouldn’t be such a nice view...;-) The characteristic buildings of San Francisco peeping out of the fog in the distance are a beautiful sight that completes this picture. Good to see you back on TE!
Guenther (10915) 2004-09-07 3:01
Wonderful and magical, Curtis! Great shot!
Spoony (3539) 2004-09-07 3:08
In the right moment! ;)
Incredible shot, with lots of magic. Fantastic environment too.
Very, very well done Curtis.
krzbia (397) 2004-09-07 3:14
The sea of fog - or even maybe the ocean of fog! I've seen such a thing only high in the mountains with low clouds - never with the fog so dense! I wonder if it happens often...
SophieL (6038) 2004-09-07 3:55
Welcome back Curtis, and especially with this image. It has been quite warm in France also these days (as if summer was finally there after two months that felt more like November! :^). So the refreshing atmosphere you want to share is going to be helpful here too.
Great composition here, with the mysterious atmosphere given by the sea of fog hiding all that's beneath, except the two beacons given by the bridge and the skyline. We don't see much, but there is no mistake as to where we are!
I like very much the way the bridge disappear into the fog, not sure where it leads too... Will we dare cross it?
carper (96) 2004-09-07 6:32
Wauw Curtis I like the shot6,
Ashot of fog and smog from cars, very good composition, good colours and a great atmosphere, great job Curtis
jhm (140110) 2004-09-07 7:54
Extraordinarily this photo, Curtis, I like your composition and the way we can see the clear San Fransisco skyline above the fog. Splendid composition, great work here!
merpb (2001) 2004-09-07 9:58
If that's what you call shrouded in mist Curtis, I'd hate to see a foggy day!.
As for the shot I've never seen anything like it before, the mist is so overpowering and all enveloping with the tantalizing glimpse of the city rising into the clear sky.
And the way the bridge thrusts out of the mist and the cable disappears is awesome.
elihesamian (26149) 2004-09-07 11:08
Amazing view, wonderful,in a great way you captured,Curtis,...Well done,I like it alot.
and composition managed perfectlly.
nwoehnl (122) 2004-09-07 12:07
Nice seeing you again, Curtis. I love the way you captured this, with the bridge engulfed in the dense clouds, and the Transamerica Pyramid and the other downtown highrises just about peeking out above. The bridge pillar on the left also makes a nice framing device. Quite a good texture you found in the fog. I've been to SF twice (fall of 1996 and summer of 2001) and always got a clear view of the bridge, can you believe my luck? It comes in high on my list of favorite cities in the U.S., only topped by this one (adding a link not to instantly give the secret away :o). Well done.
Added to my "Golden Gate Bridge" theme.
sn00zie (2384) 2004-09-07 12:21
oh my god! this view is breathtaking... is this all fog or partly clouds too? what a picture!! i shudder to think of what it must be like on the bridge.
burdallet (0) 2004-09-07 13:49
a flow of cotton is invading the day .. how many days in Frisco without Fog ?
danbachmann (1746) 2004-09-07 14:21
This is a different take on this spot and I like it that you've caught it in what I would consider and extreme. It must have been great to see it all animated like this. The photo has a nice touch with the buildings peeping through the horizon.
torben (3100) 2004-09-07 14:22
Hi Curtis, nice to see you around again. I've seen some of your earlier fog-blanket shots and they are really just preludes to this great shot. The sense of being immensed in this strange substance comes across from the image so well that I can almost feel it, especially with eyes closed (after studying the photo of course).
The tall buildings rising above the fog in the background are a good detail and they are important for the balance in the composition acting as counterweight to the bridge. Funny how these small dots can balance the mass of the bridge.
The image _do_ tilt a little bit to the right. I guess that you pointed the camera slightly downwards and that would have introduced some perspective distortion with the verticals pointing inwards. Aligning the pillar to vertical have then tilted the horizon. The perspective correction tool in Photoshop could be applied for a finishing touch here.
Still, the impact of the photo alone makes it worth a dark green one.
Hanssie (10403) 2004-09-07 14:44
Superb view on San Francisco, what a wonder !
Nice to see a half bridge and a part of the city above the mist, great shot, Curtis !
avigur_11 (22077) 2004-09-07 17:12
1. Welcome back.
2. A beautiful foggy composition, so specialview of the famous bridge.
3. Your escape from the heat produced an excellent composition.
Well done, Curtis.
Endy (1025) 2004-09-07 22:52
Wellcome back Curtis and nicely done! I like the way the bridge seems to emerge from the fog. With its red bright color, the presence of the bridge within the fog is just more powerful. I like also the buildings in background, they resemble to a serie of islands floating on a sea of clouds.
spence (65) 2004-09-07 23:25
Great work Curtis - I didn't know San Francisco was this foggy, even in the middle of Summer? The lines of the bridge are so lovely appearing out of the fog and the skyline floating in the distance is fascinating. Hope you enjoyed your days off.
pamastro (7290) 2004-09-08 1:21
Welcome back. Beautiful view to come back with, also. The fog is beautifully captured here. So light and airy. It looks so dynamic here as it appears to be engulfing the bridge. I would love to be driving along the bridge into that fog, suddenly going from clear day to a shroud. You can see how Sandburg saw fog creeping in on little cat feet by looking at this photo. So silent and quietly it enshrouds everything. Nicely done.
ChrisJ (99364) 2004-09-08 3:13
Great shot of a well known icon. The fog adds mood.
Jeppe (18654) 2004-09-08 6:36
Great to watch this low flying cloud - A good angle you got on this view - I can't take a similar shot here, ok perhaps from an airplane - Thanks Curtis for sharing this "cool" shot on a warm day ;-)
Yes - I also keep low profile on TE - too much work lately.
orme (7215) 2004-09-09 1:07
An amazing shot, Curtis. The thick white blanket of fog is just incredible, especially when compared to the clear landscape in the distant background. Very well seen and framed.
bfly (5775) 2004-09-09 8:06
hi Curtis..very impressive picture for me..I love fog and those building tops that appear on top of fog level are very interesting..looks very beautiful and somehow resembles Istanbul for me (many people say they do with steep hills or streets)..
thanks and all the best
dom_inik_m (1717) 2004-09-09 19:13
Well, all's been written down over and over, with this elogious list of more than justified praise.
So I feel quite speechless, now (well, fingerless would be more accurate, since I can't really think of any elaborate compliment to type on my keyboard).
Great, simply great, Curtis! Now, I'll think of you of the perfect alter ego of Micheangelo's representation of God on the ceiling of the Sixtine chapel, reaching from the top of the mountain and creating a bright red bridge out of the fog...
ale (1819) 2004-09-10 12:17
I'm back from my holiday and I see you have a lot of beautiful shots and a new camera too! I hope you had a great summer.
This shot is very impressive, I love it! Bravo!!
Galeota (10338) 2004-09-10 15:16
How did I miss this photograph??????
I'm picturing myself diving in the midst of this huge, soft "cloud" of fog. Never seen San Francisco bridge like this. As all the others have already said : great photo!
Isabelle (9046) 2004-09-13 17:56
Oh Curtis, how could I skip this marvelous one?
and what else should i add? it occurs to me fog does not prevent jackhammers making noise, aircrafts flying, dogs bark, cars accelerate...
would love to cross it, walking slowly, silent.
kiss to u. thanks a lot for sharing.
Yffic (6106) 2004-09-20 2:40

The atmosphere is absolulty superb.

ngythanh (8580) 2005-01-20 15:43
Which months of the years may we see the Golden Gate with fog like this?
goblyne (218) 2005-01-22 3:04
I saw something extremely similar to this on my way into Toronto this morning... the only difference is that it was sunny as hell, -15 Celsius and the lake was frozen!! :) go figure. thanks for this pic, great viewpoint you captured here.. i especially love the city far away beyond the clouds and fog.
marcb (589) 2005-01-22 12:09
Very nice picture Curtis!
It's really hard to see in one shot only the whole bridge... always some mist around, isn't it? :-)
Anyway, your eye caught it very well!!
I also like the visible higher buildings of San Francisco in the background.
Thanks for sharing!
faubry (35405) 2005-01-23 17:41
ouahhhhhhhhhhhhh superbe shot! i like it, nthing ti speak for this shot !!thanks
colinbrenchley (6431) 2005-01-29 14:58
The sort of shot that you dream of taking. I bet if I were to visit SF on a holiday it would be bright and clear and no fog. Extremely atmospheric picture.
wilche (415) 2005-01-30 13:22
They just built a gigantic bridge in France ( the highes in Europe, I think ). I saw pictures from there, the bridge was surrounded by clouds just like yours. I thought it must be cool to take a picture like this. So far no success...... You did a nice job.
YSC (433) 2005-02-03 3:30
This is truely spectacular, partially shows the bridge and have a clear background, I like this photo a lot!
I've heard that these kinds of fog (called Advection fog) is quite often occurs on the bridge, because of that they choose the bridge's color to Orange, which it can improves the visibility in the fog. Is that true?
LEA (4984) 2005-02-21 6:43
The right man in the right time at the right place ! Very nice picture
Jafer (14) 2005-02-21 18:14
it looks very unreal.
very well photo.
strangiato (10) 2005-03-03 13:04
Fantastic view, the bridge disappearing into the clouds. Good to include a part of the land as well as the buildings popping out of the clouds.
azadys (717) 2005-05-01 5:10
such a beautiful.
with this fog the details of bridge are so sharp.
jrj (34841) 2005-06-26 18:21
This one popped up, and as I see it an extraordinaire good photo. You had the possibility to be there just in this mist and make this very moody, artistic and creative shot. By your handling of the equipement you even indcluded the clear background and distant mountains - well no less than a very fine job- not least the city skyline in there is a very nice add on - yes I think this must be one of your best.. regarding tech, artistic composure, creativity and as always the very informative and educational notes.. Thank's for sharing
Ulises (1026) 2005-07-10 23:50
this is such an amazing picture!! WOW!@. even thou there is no visible horizon line , the picture is straight and in balance, the colors and the way you captured the fog is astonishing (sorry for my english, ).
the composition, that you only showed a little bit of water, then the bridge, the fog (that fog is so thick it actually looks like if they were clouds). and you can see the city "skyline". and then fading in the distance the mountains and sky,
i want to take pictures like you when i grow up
thanks for your interesting and nice note
the website is beautiful thanks
rgrds and greetings from the caribbean
jpinkham (870) 2005-07-30 12:31
Excellent, Curtis. What a dramatic and unusual perspective for this famous landmark! And the range of view is remarkable -- from the foot of the bridge in the water in the foreground to the spires and skyscrapers way in the background. Thanks for sharing. Great composition.
toddadams (575) 2005-08-05 19:50
This is a great shot with a quintessential San Francisco feel and good conveyance of what it's like to be standing there watching the fog roll in and out of the bay. This is a uniquely SanFran shot.
As Mark Twain said, "The coldest winter I ever experienced was summer in San Francisco".
cafe (71) 2005-08-19 17:38
Many people took this scene already , but this one is so wonderfull . It looks like the heaven bridge that takes people to a heaven city above the clouds. Thanks for sharing .
Rinie_Hoff (9340) 2005-08-20 18:28
Now is the moment to write a comment on this one, I will lift it to the hundred points;-) Congratulations, Curtis, the picture is really worth it. You post it while I was in Moscow, I think, after a period of not being active.
For a while I did not even realize that I never wrote a comment on this one, sometimes my memory really plays dirty tricks with me. It’s an extraordinary scenery with the bright color of the bridge in the light, the white fog, some parts of the city rising above the heavy fog, the cars on the bridge, it’s all beautiful! It’s very nice to see a little bit of the water at the bottom of the picture.
nima (658) 2005-09-02 13:07
Dear Curtis, You did very well!
I like it very much,
very powerful contrast between white and red.
Strong classic composition.
alekpet (4663) 2005-09-08 5:20
I love this scenery which also includes San Francisco skyline in the background. When I go to the USA, San Francisco is first on my check list.
rajhema (1871) 2005-11-03 13:22
Wow! fantastic fog atmosphere curtis. Good one.
