Photographer’s Note

An old lighthouse, now a surfing museum. The waves were great the day we visited; numerous professional photographers were standing just to the left of the building taking pics of the pro-surfers! Housed in the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse, the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum is a fun way to learn about more than 100 years of surfing history in Santa Cruz. It's right next to Steamer Lane, an internationally known surfing site. In the museum are a collection of surfboards ranging from redwood planks to modern, high-tech materials, wetsuits, and most significantly, photos showing Santa Cruz surfers from as early as the 1930s. The gift shop has books, T-shirts, posters and more. It's open Thursday through Monday, noon to 4 PM but more often during the summer.
