Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery is located 8 miles north of San Simeon along scenic Highway 1.
The Elephant Seal breeding season begins in December, when the migrating first males arrive, weighing up to 2 and a half tons. In late December the females begin to arrive and form "harems" for the "alpha" bull males. The females are much smaller weighing 1,200 pounds to just under a ton. Soon after the females arrive they begin to give birth to pups which were conceived the previous year.
South of here in San Simeon is the famous Hearst Castle, a wonderful ecclectic 20th century castle built by William Randolph Hearst and donated to the California State Parks System.

The light has given this view of the seal colony a whole new mood. I thought, from the thumbnail, that you had captured the light reflecting on the textures of wet rocks on the edge of the beach, The reality was a pleasing surprise!
The slight blurring of the animals, for me, is perfect for the subject, it provides the mood of sleep as they huddle and cuddle. Wonderful colours and a fine composition.
My warm regards,

It's the biggest species of seal, excellent sunset capture, they're sleeping on that beach
Your comment is very instructive
Thanks and greetings

Great shot of these giant blubbery beasties, I hope you didn't have to get too close to capture this! Nice that they are layered between black and white in colors too, helping to show their shape so clearly. A beautiful golden sunset to catch them under too and that sky is really superb!
I know of Hearst Castle, its one of the places in the great US that I really want to see someday.
All the best

Wow what an experience. I love the way the warm light illuminates their beautiful coats. Excellent vertical frame and light management. I probably would have tried to include all the island in the FG, but that's a small matter.
Cheers, have a great day

Last time we drove on Highway 1 we only saw seals in the ocean off the shore. These elephant seals on your picture are so adorable. The warm light on them is wonderful.
