Photographer’s Note

Last Thursday I found myself with another adventure similar to the one I described in Lockup II. This time it involved my locked car and a set of mysteriously disappearing keys.

I visited downtown San Rafael to do some shopping. As usual I brought my camera with me when I locked my car and headed on my way. I stopped at a "back" store to look for a neck roll to use for floor exercises, which meant, of course, that I spent a good deal of time ON the floor checking products. I left with the intention of taking some photos before visiting another store a few blocks away. Along the way I passed three gentlemen enjoying their cigars after what appeared to be a sumptuous lunch at table outside one of my favorite Italian restaurants in Marin called Il Davide. I took a few photos and went on my way.

As I approached my car I reached in my pants pocket for my keys and found NONE. I checked my car, peering through the window, but could see no keys. I thought about following the path I'd taken in the preceding hour to see if I'd dropped my keys when I changed my camera's battery but I chose instead to WALK HOME. It was only two and a half miles but it took me over an hour. Of course I stopped along the way for twenty minutes for a sandwich.

As I approached San Anselmo the thought crossed my mind that I may have lost my keys while rolling around on the floor at the back shop. When I arrived at home I called and sure enough, they had my keys. I took a bus back to the store. Along the way I walked once again in front of the Italian restaurant, finding these three men still sitting there sipping wine and smoking their cigars. The second sighting was probably three hours after the first.

I thought of calling this photo "The Good Life" since clearly these three gentlemen are living it. I would happliy have joined them, though not for the cigar I admit. But I had other things on my mind that particular day. I'm not complaining mind you, though I really do need to make a visit to Il Davide... ;-)
