Photographer’s Note
This image is for all those folks gagging on the beautiful scenery I've been posting for a couple of weeks as I've reveled in the joys of shooting with a Digital Rebel. I shot this today with the DR, using a new lens that just arrived. I was in downtown San Anselmo testing out the Canon lens when I noticed the shadows cast by two recycling containers located at the edge of the small plaza where I sat. I hardly needed 135 mm of image stabilized lens for this shot, but it was too nice to pass up.
What you see at the right is a concrete cylinder with a drinking fountain at the top, operated by this stainless steel lever, generously leaking so that Olli and Yitzhak can have some rust. And, of course shadows. Enjoy.

Congratulations, Curtis, it finally arrived, your long awaited lens? I'm sure you'll put it to a good use.
I expected some construction pic actually, but as we say: "wat in het vat zit, verzuurt niet".
This one reminds me of your zebra pic? Nice shadows, and nowhere too dark, or without definition. The tap is on a nice place in the frame, and a bit grainy, which fits the scene and the concrete very well. Fine pic.

Well seen, and back to the kind of shot I used to associate with you. Nice new lens you've got.

Nice mix of stones in different shapes, sizes and colors. Interesting shadows. I like how the color of rust is repeating in the leaves(?) on the ground.
I also like the contrast between rusty/earthy colors and shiny metal. Still, I think something – I don´t know what – is missing...

Curtis yo've an eye for graphical close ups .. that for sure...
there are so many diferent colors brown in here, it like a pallet of a painter... the compostionn is great with thelight and the shadows... you prove here once again that ordinary thing can become perfect subjects for a marvellous photo when you look at it in an othere way, very well done...

A strong and beautiful close point of view of this drinking fountain. You have caught this detail so well with a very good usage of the shadows laying on this cylinder and on the ground. The stone texture is very well rendered by a good sharpness and well saturated tones. Very well done !

Now, from what I've heard and read, you made an excellent choice for your new lens. Perfect quality/price balance. The 28-135 is a lens that you can use in most of the situations. I'm looking forward to read your opinion on the subject.
Nice to see you're back to your close ups. YOu are really good at it IMO. The textures and game of lights are very well put in evidence.

Superbe. j'aime beaucoup le côté abstrait de votre photo. Le mélange des textures, des couleurs et son rendu sont excellents. Le jeu d'ombre est un must sur cete photo sue deux plans horizontal et vertical.
Bravo

Sorry I didn't met you before. My vacation began in May and I'm just a month back. Too little time to discover what I've missed! :o)
Now I understand your very gentle comment under "Dentelles Marines"...
Just after experimenting "shooting appearances rather than objects", I can see you are also observing shapes & colours, and very well too. Good eye!

It is only because of the rust, Curtis, it is also because of the shadows and the contrast. It really catches the eye, at least my eye.
A very good composition, and a very nice idea. Tahnks.

Well-composed. I like the colors and the composition. But most of all, the shadows make this a nice, graphical composition. A cigarette butt? I like that!
