One of my favorite annual events is the Old Sacramento "Gold Rush Festival", held Labor Day Weekend, and it starts this Friday, August 30th.
This capitalist requests two bits to take his photo and 4 bits to peek inside the barrel. A "bit" is based upon the Spanish 8 reales coin widely used as a dollar equivalent in the Old West, thus the 1 real coin (one bit) was equivalent to 12 and a half cents (two bits equal 25 cents or a quarter coin)
Many attendees dress the part of the old West, and it helps to get into the spirit of things to do so. Sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between the actors and the tourists.

Someday I absolutely have to get to this event, Ray - looks like a wonderful historical opportunity AND a great photographic one! This is a hilarious shot, and one that really underlines the devil may care existence of so many of the early emigrants. Thanks!

I wonder if he will retire on his takings? Still, you can blame a man for having a good idea, as you say its capitalism at its finest! From the angle you took this, i suspect he may not have seen you, so I wonder if you got away with paying the two bits? Also, what are two bis? :)
All the best

I like to see those guys in the rodeo, and they can move fast even those barrels. Nicely captured with good expression on his face. Good lighting and sharp details. Well done, tfs.

Funny, indeed! Unusual aspect ration, what were you trying to eliminate? Also, what is a bit (other than a 1 or a 0)? Finally, I'd like to know if you paid up!
From this angle, he looks like a 1-legged chess piece.

Funny picture ;) Amazing way to make money, and I think it is not the best business on that place. Although every actor knows about his job more than me, for example.
Attractive photo. TFS!
Greetings from rainy Autumn Russia!

This guy reminds of some old cartoons. A fun one and sure worth a bit. I guess there were tourists around as you wanted to use such a tight framing.
