California 2nd Cavalry, a photo from California, West

Photographer's Note

Old Sacramento's Gold Rush Festival included Company F of the 2nd California Cavalry, recreating the group known as "The Sacramento Rangers". The Cavalry's duties included protecting immigrants settling in California, gold shipments to the East for the Civil War efforts, communication of telegraph lines, etc.

Today's Cavalry wears and uses equipment of the Civil War period of the 1860s. This image is their parade along Old Sac 2nd Street.

hehehe your last critique telling me about your costumes had me in stitches. Did you ever read A Confederacy of Dunces? It's among my favourite books and all this talk about costumes reminded me of our hero The Working Boy. Anywa, to your photo. Great colours, the warm light is magical and I love the graphism accentuated by the horses and men in military line up. The architectural backdrop is stunning. A well composed and beautifully executed photo.

Hello Ray,

A very nice picture with these 2nd California Cavalry, this do me think at the old cowboy movie out of the fifties.
Nevertheless a difficult picture through the strong light in background.
But excellent composition, splendid colors too.

A great historical shot with effective framing. You have captured the movement and managed to crop out any modern distractions. Good colour saturation and much interest in this wonderful shot.
I can't help but think the 3rd horse from left must feel like the odd one out :)
