Homeless people have illegally camped in this area just off the American River Parkway for years. But the issue took on new life when Oprah Winfrey featured it on a segment of her television show focusing on "the new faces of homelessness.”
The resultant international publicity and outrage has embarassed Sacramento leaders. The best-known shantytown in America will be closed within a month as the mayor pledges to find new digs for its residents and the property owners build new fences to keep them out.
