Orion's Bedtime
 |

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This is a shot of the Constellation of Orion slipping below the walls of Red Rock Canyon is East Central California. The Photo was taken at 11:30 PM just after a Thunderstorm had passed by. The clarity of the atmosphere was unreal and allowed me to capture the image by Moonlight. I made a very long exposure of about 6sec. at ISO 1600 with the lens wide open. This resulted in a lot of random noise in the background of the dark sky. I remedied this by seperating the sky from the foreground in PSE3 and used the levels control to lower the light values until the noise dissapeared. I tried a simple despeckle filter but it removed to many of the stars forcing me to make the adjustments manually. I then made a slight correction to the saturation levels to compensate for the Moonlight.

I like your Orion's Bedtime photo Jeff. You have done a good job with the noise removal also. Your image looks almost unreal...in a good way. The canyon colours are great and the stary sky adds even more life to your image. Well spotted.

Vernon
Nice shot Jeffrey, and in many ways an unusual one given that it's all 'natural' light. It would be great to see a little more sharpness in the rocks, but that may have been lost in post-processing. You could probably boost both sharpness and saturation in post-processing to make this one jump even more.
