Photographer's Note

I came across the original of this photo a few days ago, and I thought that I would attempt some more extensive post processing, as it's one of my earlier ones when I didn't have a good editing program. I cropped a bit tighter and made it more landscape-oriented, sharpened, and adjusted color and lighting. I also played with a few frames; this simple one seems to work the best. This was such a beautiful day, but the photo still doesn't really do it justice. The central coast is so beautiful in this area. It was a bit difficult with the sun almost overhead, but hopefully the composition works fairly well!

Taken at the stie of the Pigeon Point Lighthouse Station, about 50 miles south of San Francisco. The coast and lighting were beautiful. THe lighthouse, standing 115 feet tall, is one of the tallest lighthouses in the US. It's been in operation since 1872. The five-wick lard oil lamp is no longer in use, but the lighthouse is. It is now equipped with a lens standing 16 feet tall, 6 feet in diameter and weighing in at about 8,000 pounds, which sits in a lantern room that was constructed at the Lighthouse Service's general depot in New York before being shipped to the West Coast. The lighthouse itself is currently closed to the public, as a section of the exterior fell off in 2001 but the grounds are still open. The grounds are also home to a Hostelling International youth hostel, which we visited briefly and want to return to some time in the summer. The coastal areas are amazing, as you can see from the photo. Marine mammals, such as seals and whales can regularly be seen from shore. The intertidal zone in the reefs contains a great diverstiy of marine life. There is a tidepool area about 100 meters north of Pigeon Point and the Pescadero Marsh which is home to more than 150 species of birds is also nearby.
