Photographer’s Note
This is one of the teenage hula dancers accompanying the 2009 Hawaii All State Marching Band performing at Knottsberry Farm in CA prior to the Rose Parade. She is a classic example of the feelings of the "locals" towards "haolis" (resident caucasians)on the islands - the "grown here, not flown here" viewpoint. She is so happy to be performing her art, she looks so beautiful, and she wears a t-shirt that exclaims her pride (or racism?) loudly. This is the paradox Hawaii is in right now.
