Photographer’s Note
This photo is taken for the Scavenger Hunt.
The plaza in Mill Valley, a lovely town nestled against the slopes of Mount Tamalpais, is a favorite meeting place for folks who love to play chess competitively. In fact, the town leaders installed a half dozen tables with chess squares built in to the tops. Most of the players, however, bring rolled up sheets of plastic that serves as their chess board. On Saturday I stopped by to try out the teleconverter for the Nikon 5700 I'm borrowing from a friend. At his urging I stopped and bought a tripod before heading over to Mill Valley to check out the scene. When I arrived there were no chess players, but as the sun rose in the sky and the temperature warmed, men began arriving and before long there were three games going on. In fact, all three games can be seen in this image.
Speed chess, as the name suggests demands of the players that they not only beat their opponent, they must beat the clock as well. The time limit for the game is mutually agreed upon. Most of these players limited their games to five minutes. The man in the foreground is reaching toward the clock, which really consists of two stop watches, one for each player. When he has finishes his move he will activate his opponents clock while automatically turning his own off. I saw players obviously prepared to win their matches lose when they ran out of time. It is quite a frantic and exciting game that typically attracts a crowd of onlookers.
I was very pleased with the teleconverter which extended the 280 mm lens to 420 mm. I'm not certain exactly how far out I was with this image. I'm told the vignette around the corners is not unusual, though I've not noticed that on long photos posted at this site. If this is a horrible faux pas, I'm certain someone will let me know. I'm quite pleased with the look.
Processing was minimal with adjusted levels, shadows and highlights and saturation, as well as applied USM.

Good capture of this concentrated chess players. Strong colours and a tight setting makes a good overall pix.

Maybe that's the trick I need, a big zoom lens to do portraits. I think you did pretty well in including that many concentrated faces yet keeping the focus where it belongs. The shadows on the man in a grey shirt are really nice and adds context, I feel trees even if I don't see much of them. I have no clue about the darkened corners, but someone else surely does :o)

Curtis, IMO the vignet around the corners is much to important to be a normal result coming from the fact you used a teleconverter.
As for this photograph, there are three main problems as far as I'm concerned:
1.) The POV lacks of originality and the fact that it is taken from the side, the table not being parallel with the frame gives the feeling that the photo tilts to the left.
2.)They're playing chess but there are no expressions on their faces. You didn't capture any emotion. They don't even look like they're "thinking". Even if this is "speed chess", this game is associated with time and strategy.
3.) There are too many elements on the frame, and that is distracting because these guys don't seem to be related to eachother even though they're playing together. I had in fact exactly the same problem when I took my photos in the chess corner and still find to day that they are far too "busy".
Looking forward to see your next shots taken at the park.
Cheers

Hi Curtis,
I see you are very active in the scav hunt!
I like this scene and the quality of the lens too, about the vignetting I think you have used the zoom with the additional lens in a wideangle position. I have a teleconverter for my Nikon 4300 and when I use it in this way I have the same result.

The thing that caught my eye in the thumbnail was the guy on the left in the shade, wearing a hat and shirt, the one on the left in the sun sans shirt, hat & hair! Now this juxtaposition od light and dark and hot and cold is very nice!
The two reds are nice as well, as i the guy with the long hair and slinglet in the back just behind that chrome dome cranium of the first guy.
I like this it carries a lot of mood - well taken, Curtis

Belle photo d'un moment d'intense concentration. Le sport cérébral... Dommage pour le vignettage...

Very fine capture Curtis - and your also a speedy person (seams to be in front of the hunt :-) I like the focus on the two players in front and the sharp background as well.

I like this foto. Colors, light/shadows and the composition are very interesting to look at.
