Photographer’s Note

I thought I'd post one more image of what fog looks like from a distance before getting closer and showing the world beneath the fog at the water's edge in Sausalito. Here I'm standing at an estuary at the edge of Richardson Bay near an area called Strawberry Point in Mill Valley. I was looking south as I shot this photo toward the fog rolling over the hills above Sausalito.

As I've mentioned before the opening at the Golden Gate is a major access point for fog from the Pacific Ocean to enter the Bay. This results in a build up of fog at that opening that then begins to pour over the adjacent hills as you see here. It can be a very dramatic sight as one drives south on Highway 101 toward San Francisco. The fog rolls over the hills and then gradually disappears as the cool air confronts the warm air that is trapped in the basin created by hills that surround the Bay. It looks like a witches brew, with fog billowing and then disappearing into wisps before completely disappearing.

Enjoy the view.
