Photographer's Note

Convict Lake's unfortunate name originated in the wild-west days when a desperado gang escaped Carson City, Nevada prison and holed up in this canyon. A shootout with a posse resulted in the death of the lawmen's leader, Robert Morrison (for home the mountain in this image is named after).

Convict Lake's unique geology differs from most of the light colored granite Sierra, because the sedimentary and metamorphic rocks have not been eroded away to reveal the granite that uplifted the range.
