Photographer's Note

Mammoth Meadow is just off Highway 203 near the main Eastern Sierra Nevada corridor's main Highway 395.
The flat fertile landscape here is fed by snow melt from the meandering Sherwin Creek. The mountainous background is within the protected John Muir Wilderness.

This Wilderness was approved by Congress in 1964, and contains 581,000 acres, with a length of 90 miles along the crest of the Eastern Sierra Nevada. It has 57 spectacular peaks over 4,000 meters in elevation. Glacial action has carved the landscape and there remain glaciers even today.
