Photographer's Note

Continuing from yesterdays's post - a top of the Postpile view, displaying the primary geometric pattern the hexagon, and next are pentagons.
The lava flow formation was created some time less than 100,000 years ago. Because of the original great thickness of the lava flow, much of it cooled slowly and evenly which is why symmetrical columnar jointing occurs when certain types of lava contract while cooling.
The size of the Postpile columns average 18 meters (60'} high, and 0.6 meters {2'} in diameter.

Other notable basaltic column formations around Earth, and I hope to someday visit are:
Svartifoss in Iceland,
Giant's Causeway in Ireland
Fingal's Cave in Scottland
Garni Gorge in Armenia
Cyclopean Isles near Sicily
Prismas Basalticos in Mexico
Organ Pipes on Mount Cargill, New Zealand
Gilbert Hill in Mumbai, Australia
Column Cape on Kunashir Island, Russia
