Photographer's Note

South of Bishop at the small town of Independence, a spur road from Highway 395 leads west and dead ends in Onion Valley Canyon at 9,200 feet. Within the Inyo Mountains seen here is California's second tallest - Mount Williamson at 14,375 feet.

Onion Valley is named after a wild swamp onion, whose rosy-pink flowers dot the canyon's slope in July. At the lower elevation yellow rabbitbrush and as seen here, the cottonwood provide autumn color.
