Saint Joseph's, Mission San Jose, Fremont, California

Mission San Jose, founded 1797, is located approximately 25-miles north of San Jose in the little community of Mission San Jose, California. This is St. Joseph's which is a replica of the original church build on this location. In 1868 the original mission church was destroyed by an earthquake and a wooden Gothic church was built in it's place. In 1982 the wooden church was relocated north on Mission Boulevard and this replica was erected. The mission complex looks much like it did in 1830 when there was over 2000 Indians at the mission.

The Shepard's crook and bell seen in the foreground was erected by the State of California and was used to mark the El Camino Real (the Royal Highway) or the main road linking all of the missions in California. I remember this marker in the 1950's all along US-101 but they have now disappeared and are only found at the missions.
