The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, also known as NASA, landed after 10 months and 711 million kilometers long trip the little space probe “Phoenix” at the Martian North Pole. Aren’t we lucky that NASA isn’t a TE member? The pictures that they delivered so far are terrible. No composition, no thoroughness in the light management … Have a look yourself if you didn’t do it so far. You see what I mean? Where is the foreground element? Where is the scale element? Etc, etc, etc … However, there is one striking thing about this shot! It is the surface. The flat landscape is strewn with tiny pebbles and shows polygonal cracking, a pattern that seems to be typical in Martian high latitudes and also seen in permafrost terrains on Earth. The polygonal cracking is believed to have resulted from seasonal freezing and thawing of surface ice.

I have seen similar polygonal cracking previously. Not during my own Martian expedition but at Death Valley. A similar principle to the freezing and thawing happens at Badwater. This place consists of a huge salt surface on the lowest point of the North American continent. Areas of the salt pan are regularly flooded by streams or by precipitation runoff. Some salt dissolves with each flooding and precipitates again as a smoothing veneer when the water evaporates. Drought contracts and fractures the salt pan creating polygons. These polygons grow at their edges as salt water seeping up the cracks evaporates. The growing polygons push against each other, causing the edges to bend up to form salt saucers.

Now, here is the question: Do we really have to go all the way to Mars to get these lousy images and proof that there is live or not if we didn’t solve many VITAL questions on Earth and at the same time we can have much better photographs done down here on Earth?

Hi Peter,
A strikingly stark image but amazingly beautiful in its own way. The textures created by the dryness are quite amazing. You do such a fine job of presenting the details in the foreground but never leave the distant skyline out. Very well done and TFs. Gerald

Wow, truly an otherworldly scene. Love the soft light you've captured, it's such a contrast from the rugged earth. Great shot!

Hey Peter,
The DOF is outstanding, great detail of the ground otherwordly shape and texture. The light and purplish tones gives the impression of another world.
cheers,

Hello Peter,

Your Martian shots are technically better than those of NASA. For one thing, they haven't leveled the horizon. It cost around $520 for NASA, and you probably produced this surpassing shot for a little less. Perhaps you should have cropped out the atmosphere however, the spectrum in your image revealing a more Nitrogen-Oxygen atmosphere than Mars possesses.

Warm regards,

Bulent

Hi Peter,
This one too fits its title well1 Real out of the planet stuff! Good choice of vertical framing giving depth; just enough sky due to low horizon framing, superb color tones and good detail and textures.
Excellent

Hi dear Peter,
Mars on earth !! You had posted some similar captures before, but this one is a real "Leckerbissen" !!
Good pov and amazing depth of sharpness. Very nice graphical effect.

Hello Peter,
Another fantastic shot from yours...
The low point of view and the very few spave given to the sky is well thought of. Of course, the colors in the sky are outstanding and the low light added with the ND filter are producing a superb result.
These cracking are really estonishing...
Great work again!
Have a nice day.

This is a wonderful picture !
Colors in the sky are beautiful and the point of vue, with this amazing foreground, is really good.
Congratulations !

Hi Peter

wonderful shot showing the textures of these polygons, cetainly shooting late evening has paid off bringing out a great deal of colour with the help of the ND filters.

hi peter,
Your low POV works well to emphasize the depth of the landscape, the colors are so beautiful,The texture of the ground is exceptional .
really good one

This excellent picture proofs that there is water on Mars and, at a minute fraction of the cost NASA is wasting. The sharpness is so good we almost can see each individual salt crystal.

Hi Peter,
Just wonderful. Beautiful twilight tones. Those polygons are fascinating. And you selected foreground well, that big wrinkle is special. I guess it takes a little more time to teach those NASA robots art of photography.

Hi Peter,

Creative image.
Beautifull tones, and I like your title.
Excellent.

Well for a start someone should tell them to level the tilted horizon; yours is a good lesson on that issue. If Martians landed here no doubt they would think earth was unpopulated, unless they came across a canvas "dome" with a napping photographer inside.:D This is another excellent shot from this place with excellent tech quality. The depth and sharpness are perfect. The surface reminds me of patched suede. How hard is it? Is it brittle? I almost forgot to mention the sky. The grad brought the sunrise colours out very well.
Good shot
Kath

Olá Peter,

Grande imagem captada na vertical, faz um impacto visual muito grande com uma profundidade excelente. Cores e textura magnificas. A exposição f/22 foi muito inteligente para criar definição e profundidade.

Great note;) So you suggest all NASA members should have a training with TE Members? Yeahhhhhhh I agree;) Or I have a better idea - we will send you to Mars - I am sure you will bring fabulous shots from there;)

And seriously...Amazing shot, superb composition and colours. Perfectly chosen POV.
I like it a lot! Good job!

hi Peter,
so, when are we going to Mars to show that decent photographers can find fine composition even there? that NASA shot really is nothing to write home about. unlike your post ;) love the textures and gradient sunset colours, the combination looks more unreal that the Mars surface. excellent!

with best regards,
Kristine

Hello Peter,
but the one you linked is pretty much better than the ones from the Raw Images from Robotic Arm Camera ;-) Overexposed, symmetric approach.
The texture of yours here is nice, could be also a model of some mountain landscapes. Very pleasant with the background colour of the sky.
And for your question: No and yes, as it is makes sense to go there but makes no sense to forget out "local earth" challenges.

Beleza!

Hi Peter
I like this shot a lot. great details of the cell like formation in this sea of salt. The POV has a great effect and make it look even more impresive while preserving the depth.
Regarding Mars you have a nice advantage, they took the picture from here with limited camera movement and POV selection :) Plus the image is amazing just because is from another planet not because of the picture it self. But you did and excellent introduction in your note :)

hey there, pete

very trek-earthy foto in the most direct sense of the word... love your POV. the detail is fantastic down to the level of salt christal (or is it frost?) playing out in the foreground. the patchwork pattern looks almost like my grandfather's coat he used to wear while doing logging in winter.

as to your rhetorical question at the end of the note: hmm... i feel, there will always be problems of some sort 'at home' :)) i do not argue that we should not see to their solution, but that shouldn't stop us from looking for further horizons, should it? after all, we most likely would know much less about the world around us if isac newton just cared about healing the bump the famous apple gave to his forehead... ;))

Hello Peter,

Beautiful and strange nature. The title is also sharing this idea.
It remembers me some landscape of Bolivia and the salar Uyuni.
The composition of the photo is well adapted to this subject as the foreground shows details and after the compositon with the wide angle drives nicely the looks toward the moutains in background and the colors of the sunset.

Yves.

Hi Peter,

Another exceptional shot of this place. The contrast in the difference of light foreground - horizon is wonderful. Nice nice nice. I really need to go there one day ;-).

Greetings!
Dennis

Hi, Peter -

Yes, it looks like Mars. But as Bulent pointed out, it's got the wrong atmosphere, and the horizon is too far away. Fix that, please. ;-)

A peculiar ratio of land to sky here. It took a minute of study to decide that I like it. Incredibly crisp and focused - at f/22 it should be! And great use of post-sunset glow.

Best,
Dan

Hi Peter, you are right in many thing you say here. I couldn't agree with you more that NASA should have been advised by a good photographer not only for the composition but for the equipment they should have been used, the angle of view and many other elements that only a photographer should know.
Now for your photo: A classical Martian photo, I am still waiting to see those little green men in the distance. Perfect framing, sharp details and clever use of your ND 3 hard filter. What more to say?
Bravo
Nick

excellent depth and sharpness, a perfect photojob, excellent texture and details, the colours are great !

Hi, Peter. Your note doesn't lack humour, but raises some important issues too. No doubt you are a much better photographer than the one from the NASA. I think you should send an application letter. Who knows? Your foreground is fantastic, showing lots of details and the colours in the sky are gorgeous. There is a very good depth, also in the background with the different ridges on both sides of the image.

Hello Peter,
It's a fantastic and incredible landscape!
Just a great picture.
Greetings.

Hi Peter, I agree with your comments on the expensive visits to Mars etc.We should use the money to make this a better world. This composition is striking and could indeed be another world. The strong foreground details and the colours in the back make it emotive to see on TE. TFS. Murray.

Hi Peter,
Looking at your gallery I see that you like to use the vertical format for quite a few of your landscape images, I really like this and think that sometimes this format really draws the eye into the landscape and gives more concentration on it. This is a great one as our eye is led into the shot along the crusts, textures and lines of salt to the beautiful orange glow on the horizon.

Wanda

Peter,
This compo is just perfect IMO. You underlined the FG texture, and what choice could be better here ? None, great job,

Hallo Peter,

Mark

I felt like I'm standing right in the scene. Excellent shot of this amazing phenomenon. You have reasonably use small aperture in order to have a large depth of field as it kept as much of the salt pan in focus as possible. Excellent.

purple and orange at their best combination... looks from out of this world indeed... masterful as always doc... cheers...

Superb lighting & texture, with good repetition of patterns & shapes. I read in the news this week, that contact has been lost with the Mars probe. I hope they can reestablish contact. Tfs!

Hi Peter,

Great texture! You got such an impressive result with this low POV, the salt cracks are really graphic. The pastel colors are great and add a lot to the MARS mood.

Hi Peter. I see what you mean, I think their white balance was off too its far to red ;-). Now about your photo, are you sure this was taken on earth? Very other worldly. The sky only strengthens the surreal feeling. Nice work and thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Absolutely fascinating that we find so much similarity under vastly different temperature conditions on two planets in our solar system.

It is further proof that Earth is not so very different from other planets and might mean that life as we know it is more common throughout the universe than we'd previously imagined.

Hello Peter
It's difficult not to think this as your picture, even from the thumbnail. Has your trademark low POV with lots of FG interest. The salt pans are amazing, bathed in the purplish tinge. Incredible sharpness for us to see almost each grain of salt. The sky is amazing, especially the gradation of colours (is that how ND grad filter works). The hills play a very important role in the beauty of the compo. & without them IMO, the flatness alone would not have made it a visual treat as it is now.

Hola Peter.
Very interesting place and you catched a perfect spot of the ground with great sharpness and impressive details. The colors of the sky are very good and the mountains produces a nice silhouette.
Sorry that I have been slow with my critiques and posting my shots in TE but when I came back from my trip from California I decided to close my office and get retire from medicine. For the last 10 days I have been just working on that and finally yesterday I was able to finish emptying my office. 71 years old and 47 years working as MD, I think it's time to travel more and take more pictures.
Un fuerte abrazo.

Hi Peter. Yes, this does look more like the surface of Mars than something on earth - but it's an incredibly beautiful photograph and superb light management with the assistance of your ND filter. This seems to prove too that you don't lose sharpness at f/22 (I recall a debate on that issue last year here on TE). I am wondering what your point of focus was to achieve such good DOF? Excellent work and an amusing note. Cheers . . . David
