Double Rainbow Photo

Photographer’s Note

I took this picture of a double rainbow recently when I was on my way home from San Francisco. When I saw it, I pulled out of the road and took my Nikon coolpix from my bag. The main rainbow is beautiful and bright but the second one is hardly visible in my picture. I took several shots. Then I noticed that the area of the sky within the main rainbow is lighter than the outer area. I do not know why. Does anybody here at TE knows?
The picture was taken at Port Chicago Highway in North Concord near the BART Station (Bay Area Rapid Transit Station). You can see the BART rail on the lower right hand corner with white steel guards and white lamp posts. The highway below the mountains is Highway 4 (it runs East-West). The group of trees between the highway and the mountains is the former area of the Concord Naval Weapons Station. It has been turned over to the local city government by the U.S. Navy about a year and a half ago.

Beutifull colors and amazing light. Everyhing is sharp and well contrasted, I wil try a workshop in iodrer to suppress the road and the car.

The green colour in the hills is just as fabulous as the colours of the rainbow itself. Both are set off well by the dark grey clouds.

Whta a stunning rainbow. The colors are amazing and thelighting is jsut breathtaking. I never associated Concord with this type of beauty.
The second raibow is very clearly seen on my monitor. In one of my raibow photos there's a discussion about the reason for the sky colors.
Just gorgeous.

oooooh, wonderful double rainbow, very clean and smooth image. I like this beautiful green hills and the different tones of gray on both sides of the "main" rainbow. Very well captured.

What a great view of this beautiful natural moment. The colours of the rainbow are very well visible in both ones. Maybe it would had been better, in my opinion, to try to avoid the road, lamps, and signals of civilization, to make it more natural. The green smooth hills are also very nice.
Very good idea having the camera with you.
In my travel by the Sardinia island, in Italy, three years ago, I saw one double rainbow, but in this moment, I didn't have my Nikon F80, only a simple pocket camera, so the definition is not as good as yours. Maybe one day I do a workshop in it to post it here in TE.

I'm so amazed with the beauty of this scene.. you were lucky to have your camera with you when you saw it! the colors are amazing.. the green mountains and the rainbow combined seem to be a a fairy land.. hehe
BTW I think that maybe the clouds in the sky would be placed in an angle that couldn't cover the light of mountains.. does it make sense? lol

I would just crop the picture, leaving out the road and the highway. Cover with your hand lower part of the photo and you will see that the rainbow with the hills is from the LOTR movie. In other words, get rid of that highway.
