Photographer’s Note

The weather was much better on our trek to the old Alameda Naval Air Station this weekend, as compared to last weekend. However, there was not much happening, so I took pictures of some of the structures on the base, which are mostly, sadly, falling into ruin. This shot is a detail of one of the huge aircraft maintenance hangars (I have put another shot into Workshop to give you an idea of the size of these hangars).
The airfield at Alameda NAS included 469,700 sq yards of aircraft parking apron and seven large aircraft maintenance hangars, such as this one. Following closure of the base and transfer to the City of Alameda, the maintenance hangars are now used as soundstages and for tradeshow exhibit fabrication, motor coach conversion, and other light industries, including a very good boutique distillery at Hangar #One.

Technical: Slight rotation (I seem to tend to list to the right :-) ), a bit of cropping, increased saturation and contrast, shadows/highlights adjusted, and sharpened.
