[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Is this an egret or a heron? I am not a birder, but since our move to Alameda on the SF Bay I am certainly seeing a lot of birds! It's time to buy a bird book.

This was taken on a manmade "beach" next to a manmade lagoon within my residential neighborhood. Alameda is interlaced with these lagoons, which help to drain the area. Being right on the Bay, the area is a wonderful habitat for waterfowl. On the day this photo was taken, our heron/egret was joined by several cormorants, a flotilla of ducks, a lone Canadian goose and my particular friend "Penelope" (a very strange bird indeed). My walks are always interesting and often very entertaining.

Technical: Sharpening and severe cropping.

Hi Jackie!
Nice shot! I like it. Colours are nice and the bird is great. I didn't even know it existed. Thanks for giving me that chance. Seems you're not the only one who needs to learn more about birds...

nice pose by the bird.

Snowy Egret. Nice shot. :) Breeding plumes are very distinctive, as are the yellow feet on black legs in keying out this particular species, which is making quite a wonderful come-back after its veritable slaughter for its plumes during the Roaring Twenties. :)
