Photographer’s Note

This huge pile of rope was laying on the wharf next to the aircraft carrier USS Hornet. The colors called to me and so I decided to try a more "artsy" type of photograph.

USS Hornet: The present USS Hornet aircraft carrier (Essex class) presiding at Alameda Naval Air Station (now closed and renamed Alameda Point) is the 8th and last such ship to bear the name. The 7th Hornet (CV-8) transported the B-25s for Jimmy Doolittle’s air raid on Japan in WWII (the planes were loaded onto the carrier at Alameda NAS). Later that year it was sunk at the Battle of Santa Cruz Island. The 8th Hornet (CV-12) was launched in 1943. Her planes took part in the “Marianas Turkey Shoot” (1944, Battle of Philippines Sea) and supported the amphibious landing assault on Iwo Jima. She also saw action in the Korean and Vietnamese Wars. She was the recovery carrier for Apollo 11, the first manned moon landing, as well as for Apollo 12. She was decommissioned in 1970 and was later given to Alameda as a museum ship. See my earlier photo submission "Wings" for more Alameda Naval Air Station info and history.

Technical: Enhanced w/ Shadows/Highlights and Contrast tools in PS. Getting an urge to be wild and crazy, I super-saturated this to see how it would look. I really liked the result, but decided it would be more appropriate for TrekLens than for TE (I have put the supersaturated image in Workshop). I'd like to hear your opinion.
