Photographer’s Note
This is a climber on Mount Lemmon which is just north of the city of Tucson, Arizona. This was taken March of 2009 during a trip with my family to visit my in-laws, who are retired in Tucson. Mount Lemmon was named in honor of botanist Sarah Lemmon, who trekked to the top of the mountain with Native American guides by mule and foot in 1881. The peak sits at over 9000 feet. As you ascend the mountian the landscape transforms from the Sonoran Desert, filled with Suguaro and Prickly Pear catus to evergreen forrest, which had a snow cover the day of our visit. The temperature difference is about 30 degrees F from base to peak. Tucson residents frequently flock to the peak (accessible by road)in the height of Summer to escape the heat. The climber in this photo is at about half way up the mountain at a site called Windy Point.
