Pictures from Horseshoe Bend are quite popular at TE. Without seeing a picture of this place you certainly will not feel compelled to make a stop at Highway 89 several miles prior to arrive in Page. A small non significant parking lot with a dirt road is almost all that gives you a clue that there is sightseeing behind the hill. First you go up a little bit the hill and then a little down the hill, probably a total of ½ mile and finally you stand in front of “IT”, or shall I better say above “IT”? The scenario that unfolds is indescribable. The view is worth a travel from everywhere in the world.

For photographic arrangements I strongly suggest the early hour until about 2pm. A wide-angle lens is mandatory (and I really mean a wiiiiiiiiide-angle!) as well as a tripod for the eventual stitching work in the digital darkroom in the case the wide-angle isn’t wide enough; last but not least a circular polarizing filter.

Another attraction that you cannot miss in this area around Page is the Antelope Canyon. Don’t do it like me. I didn’t know about it and as soon as I was back home and looked up the area through pictures posted at TE I almost had a heart attack. Have a look yourself at the shots that different TE members posted from around Page and you will instantaneously understand what I mean and I know that after seeing this shots you will change your already planned, booked and payed travel destinations for this year!!!

Nice composition, I can see where a polarizer is necessary. Thanks for the heads up about Page.

Hello Peter and Happy New Year,
A fine image showing the canyon and the magnificent colors of the entire scene. Excellent composition with the foreground entry.
This dry and arrid country that was once a continent and sea sure does not appear the same now, we should be thankful for the geokogical changes that we witness everyday, as they will one day become scenes for someone, sometime in the future.
Excellent post and note, great idea to include works of the area with your post...

Hi Peter!
The vertical framing was the good choice for this breathtaking view, which you composed to perfection: just enough of this dramatic sky, the suoperb view on the canyon and river, and a bit of foreground with even a semi circular and symmetric patch of grass... giving a strong sense of depth and distance...
I don't mention light colors and sharpness as all are first rate.
That is excellent job (i'm tempted to say... as usual!)
Greetings
Laurent

Hi Peter,
How nice to see the bend like this instead of the normal view. People are most used to see the whole curve, but because i have been there, this is also a view i can appreciate. The vertical composition is making a nice depth as well and the big fat clouds on top dominate the scenery...very nice.
I see it's a scan, you did very well on the scanning...very good work.

Bonjour Peter

Hello Peter,

This is an aweome natural place. The river at the bottom of the canyon look ver dramatic from this viewpoint. The red rock and the little vegetation also add that special feeling of being away from everything. Nice sharpness and light. Thanks Peter and much joy in the New Year to you and your family :-)

Hi Peter,
Whew ... looking at the shots taken from this place, it is amazing area indeed for a photo session ... worth visiting next time. These are areas possibly not well known to travel agents. The prominent 'S' curve is a drawcard here but the rugged terrain is just as spectacular. Well captured and composed. Excellent work! tfs and Happy New Year to you and your family.
Regards,
Renier

Hi Peter,
Wonderful scan work... I barely see signs of an scan... maybe on the sky.
Your portrait framing is very original and gives an appropriate effect to the POV chosen. Well done!
I like it a lot... and I love this kind of notes... VERY useful!

Hello Peter,
I first had a look to your superb picture. Then red your note, checked the link you proposed (amazing pictures!) and comes back.
Pfff! It is incredible. I can't change my holidays plans, as I won't leave this year but.. I have another place to add on my 'list of places to visit absolutely'.
TFS. It is wonderful.

Peter bonjour.

nice view from above

Hey Peter...great shot of the meandering river..the colours are well saturated..love the green against the red rock...the ones on the right are layrered/plated..like mica..which one is this ??

..a very interesting place indeed...from the perspective seems that one can climb down the opening in front to the base..did you try it..? :)

Oi Peter!
Desentortou a ferradura? rsrs..

What a beauty!! I relly enjoy the vertical compo giving a stunning dof with the river dividing the fg in 2. Even if it's a scanned shot the quality is excellent with well visible details throughout and the colours vibrant.
Thanks for sharing this Peter

Well I missed Antelope Canyon AND Horseshoe Bend, so imaging how I feel!! All the way over the Atlantic and the whole continent too.
I guess this is the left side of the horseshoe? Not having seen it with my own eyes it's not easy to connect this with the images of the whole bend. Excellent quality scan with great light/shade contrasts, and vivid colours. Well done
Kath

Hi, Peter. The green colour of the river contrasts very well with the ochre of the canyon. The foreground creates a good depth in the picture and the S of the bend creates a nice line that we follow towards the background. I had the same kind of feeling as you when I saw pictures on TE, among others the one you posted recently of Mono Lake. When I was in the USA, we just drove by coming from Yosemite and didn't stop a minute. If I went back, I think I would try to stay a few days in the area...

Hello peter
what an impressive point of view!. really sharp and clear even in the distance. I like very much these colours too.

Salut Peter!

Hello Peter,
Very nice picture with this amazing water color!
The vertical framing fit very well to the landscape.
Greetings.
Igor

Great picture of one section of Horseshoe Canyon. LOL!!! Great color and technical quality. You photographed that section during good lighting! That is something not as easy as it sounds.

I could not agree more with you about this place. It is certainly one of the great photo opportunities of the world. Words and pictures simply cannot describe it.

Though not well marked it does have an actual sign indicating it is there on the highway. That is more than a lot of other incredible photo opps in that amazing geologic area of our planet have. :)

The first weekend I drove to Page it was specifically to photograph Antelope Canyon. But it was cloudy during the optimum hours of the day for photography of Antelope(10:30AM-2PM oddly enough) so I did not even go there. I didn't want to be disappointed.

Hi Peter,

After Henk Meyer posted his Horseshoe Bend photograph, it has become so difficult for anyone to post a decent composition of this location :-). So in that sense, very daring to post this one! Also here amazing detail. Nice. Amazing the colour of the water. Would love to go there one day and challenge Henk with a posting ;-).

Greetings, Dennis

Hi Peter, first let me tell you how I appreciate not only the shot, but your description in how to find this place and take the shot itself. I don't know if and when I'll be able to get to Page (hope so) but when I do, I know this will be one shot I will try to duplicate, using my own equipment and techniques of course. This is a beautiful spot. Your shot does it great justice. Your positioning (as I understand it) is unique, and works very well. The colour and contrasts seen in this shot, augmented with that polarizer are awesome. All very nicely captured and presented. I see too that you shot this with film. You've done an excellent job in your scan and PP.

Thanks, John

Fantastic capture of this famous landmark with the beautiful blue sky with its intricate cloud patterns contrasting wonderfully with the deep green of the river and the unique red sandstone cliffs that form the deep canyon. Excellent details and sharpness to this lovely western landscape.

Peter,
Another great picture from this place I'd love to photograph.
Here you framed it in an original way, not in the classic "full curve pano" way.
I like that, as, even if I know lots of pictures from this place, I haven't seen this picture before !

Not just posting a photo but providing a guide for photographers to find this place, Peter, is a steal. How many of them will flock to catch this place! Nice perspective of lovely landscape in such colors, real nature love. Great work. TFS

Hi, Peter -

Aside from the very useful advice - I learned about Antelope Canyon myself from TE - this is an incredible picture. The curve of the river leads the eye into the distance, and the choice of vertical was a good one. There is a bit too much purple in the distance, but that's what you see in the West.

Best,
Dan

Hello Peter,

This is truly a magnificent and expansive shot of Horseshoe Bend, and I believe Kathy Marscher has also posted it. The details of the foreground, the depth of field, the colors and resolution all collaborate in making this a most revealing and compelling photograph. I hope that your new year will bring health, happiness, hope and prosperity.

Hello Peter -

Nicely done! This just goes to show you that planning and preparation are so important on a trip especially a trip where photography is an important non snapshot element. You know there are many Horseshoe Bends along the Colorado and the other major rivers in the southwest so if one does his homework he can find these vistas where ever he travels. I have never been to this one, but the one up in Horseshoe Bend State Park near Moab is wonderful as is the one on the San Juan above Mexican Hat, Utah. Actually this one is called the Goosenecks. But, you get my point - plan ahead.

Thank you for sharing.

O último parágrafo desta arrancou-me uma gargalhada. Interessante abordagem vertical aqui, bem diferente do normal "U" completo desta vista deslumbrante.

Hi Peter,
This composition makes me think that you put a lot of thought into the framing, there is such a sense of balance and harmony. The deep green curves of the river hold center stage, while the FG bush placed so symmetrically seems to punctuate the curve. The close-up detail of the FG rock seems to give greater detail to all of the rock. The distant blue canyon walls make the river seem as if it goes on forever. Then there is that stunning sky and the deep rock V that points to the river. That creative vision clearly pre-dated the D200.

Hello Peter
This spectacular place has been represented quite well in TE. This IMO represents the left side of the horse shoe bend & if I remember some earlier pictures, there's a horizontal shale/sandstone layer jutting out on the left, which is not there in your shot. I haven't been to this place, so I have to be satisfied seeing this wonder of nature through your eyes. I also see that this is a csnned image. Wonderful quality. I guess light would be difficult to master if it's late in the day (noon onwards) because of the haze. Good work Peter!

A fine point of view of Horse-shoe bend! I agree with you that it must make anybody want to travel from anywhere in the world to admire this landscape!
I like the contrast between the blue colour of the sky and the green colour of the river; I like the different colours of the stone too!
