I went without you.
This is one of the places Serghei wanted to see while on his visit to Arizona, and one that I really wanted to show him. Unfortunately, a landslide earlier in the year had washed out part of the road leading there in the direction we would have taken from the Grand Canyon, causing a detour of an additional 2+ hours just to get here…not to mention another 2+ hrs. getting back!? Long story short, it didn’t happen.
I had never been here either, and rather than deal with the crazed maniacs of Black Friday shoppers, I decided to get out of town and take the drive North over the extended holiday weekend to finally witness this with my own eyes.
I know it’s nothing new in terms of originality, and I would guess it’s been featured here more than anyone would care to count…but after seeing it for the first time myself, and still in awe, I just couldn’t resist posting a picture of my own. I would highly suggest putting it near the top of your travels, pictures do it no justice! If you’ve ever wanted to experience some of natures majestic prowess, this is one of the best places to get a vivid idea. I don’t think I’m overstating this when I say, it’s a breathtaking view!
It may not be one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World, but Horseshoe Bend is undeniably well worth any visit! Now, if you have a healthy fear of heights like me, take my advice…stay away from the edges, there’s no coming back from a fall here!
This shot was only made possible by one thing that the digital age of cameras can now provide….live preview. I have it available, but don’t use it often. This was a case however where I couldn’t have done without it. I actually got as close enough to the edge as I could handle, lied on my stomach with arms outstretched over my head, held on to the camera as tight as I could while holding it over the cliff and lined up the shot through the LCD screen. I was still shaking just a bit out of fear, hopefully the stabilizing lens kept most of the focus in check. :)
Thanks for taking a look.

Quel impressionnant point de vue pour nous montrer le fer à cheval, phénomène naturel de toute beauté. J'aime les contrastes de couleurs et la grande netteté de l'ensemble assez vertigineux.

Many thanks for interesting introductory note and also for your nice comment to my latest photo, which was first removed by editor (!?) and only after my protest the editor released it.
But now to your gorgeous photo. The view down to turning Colorado river is outstanding. The arrangement is, IMO, perfect. Thanks good light all nice details and textures are very well visible. I managed to visit Grand Canyon two times but newer made it to this unique place. Thanks for posting it.

Hello Jason ,
This is an excellent capture (in term of framing , exposure , sharpness) for this iconic place of the american West .

Bravo.

So harking back to your donut shop, am I right to guess this is where the REALLY big ones are made? Just fill the canyon with dough, get the hole, take it out and deep fry it in....erm.....a lake of oil? I'd like to think so :)
This is an incredible formation, I remember in school being fascinated by the formation of these horseshoes, and oxbow lakes, but I've never seen one with these stunning vibrant red colors. I love how the greenery stretches from the water up the side of the rock face too. Beautiful place, and I can see why live preview came in handy. It looks like a long way down.

so,this is the place where you hide before Black friday:)
Haha,I´d like to see facial expression of Serghei now:)I think it´s the best incentive for me to visit Arizona and for Serghei to come back there asap.
The view is simply breathtaking my friend!
Would be perfect for a cover of National Geographic for example.
Have a nice day

What a dilemma! Joining the Black Friday shoppers or admiring the Horseshoe Bend :)))
Without a doubt I would hate it if I would have been in Arizona and have missed this.
The view is absolutely stunning. What a nature wonder!
The colour contrasts are wonderful.
Is it possible to hike down to the water somewhere?
Best regards, Paul

Wow, what a view! Once again, your diligence and strange stance resulted in a great photo. :-) The colors of the rock and water are wonderful. I wouldn't get close to the edge without a railing; I like heights, but I also get dizzy quite a bit! Great job on this one. :-)

bel colpo, una vista spettacolare e impressionante.
Ottimo pov e bella inquadratura, è incredibile pensare a come sia stata forte l'azione delle acque e quanto tempo ci sia voluto per effettuare l'erosione.
macjake (48333) 2013-12-02 14:31
so this is near you?????????????????????????????
I'm on my way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tosca and I have wanted to see this horseshoe bend for a long time. didn't know you were in the same area.
I hear that Page also has other wonderful natural beauties. We may come on down in the near future.
I've always wanted to shoot this at sunrise, sunset or blue hour...looks fantastic!
as does your photo. the opening seems to fit perfectly for us the viewer.
and i have to say, the WS photo is awesome, it shows a hole in the ground but thats it, you'd never know that was the iconic horseshoe bend!
thanks for these great shots, all i can say is awesome!

Hola amigo del Norte
Late, but all the same
Happy Thanksgiving day!!!
Can t believe how I am laughing reading ...I went without you, you are funny also telling the way you take the photo
To me, not an expert, its the first time I saw such a place with these imprec¿sive colors, textures, contrasts
Like the way you take, it seem to be an island at the midlle
And for this creative/dificult capture you deserved...
Merci par le partage mon ami

It is truly a great sight.Great view from the Grand Canyon. You took a lot of pain to reach this place and take a photograph for us.Thanks for sharing.

wow wow.what a place.fantastic topography and landscape here.just love the pov.such an attractive pic.

Well, this is the first photo of Horseshoe Bend that I have seen, so do not worry, it is not old hat for me. Your chosen POV is excellent and your camera's antivibration feature worked very well. I hope you had the camera strap wrapped around your arm. I always have the strap around my neck or, if that will not be possible, I wrap a portion of the strap around my arm so that in case I lose my grip, the camera stays with me after a short fall.

great the view as the presentation of this famous landmark of Arizone, the horseshoe Bend.I like this breathtaking scenery with the Nature to has done its 'magic'.Great the panoramic view as the light and the colours are excellent captured and presented.

this is another place that I just want to experience in that big wide country of yours. You are so lucky having all of these amazing wildernesses so near to you. I would go bananas and use so much petrol!! Needless to say this is a stunning shot and taken superbly considering you were lying flat on the ground dangling it over the edge. The camera that is! So many glorious tones and textures here and of course the beautiful sweep of the river and its strange green colours. I love the fg detailing too it gives a real sense of the height and width of this awesome place.
Nice one and well worth avoiding the Black Friday mob! Something that has broken out this year over here, with fights and pandemonium. Shame we did not get the holiday as well though.
mesutilgim (75524) 2013-12-03 13:43
Amazing capture from Arizona with good birdsey view and very good layout.

A place as magnificent as this deserves to be photographed over and over again. We all know that the time of year, the time of the season and the time of day can all create subtle changes, not to mention the skill and style of the photographer.
I can imagine the intake of breath as you looked over this edge at the raw beauty of the canyon sculptured by the meandering river. The scale is mind blowing!
I love the rich colours, each layer defining a change in the rock composition.
I think you were right to crop much of the sky, which was only useful for setting a sense of depth.
My warm regards,
Waylim (24338) 2013-12-04 14:26
I have been here myself and know just how dangerous it can be to take photo of it in full view. I have my friend hold me by my legs :) not the legs of my pants.
Anyway, great shot. I love the even exposure without the strong sun light. Excellent colors with adequate saturation and contrast.
ourania (21414) 2013-12-05 11:05
a breathtaking sight and a stunning capture of it. There's captivating depth and fascinating textures and colours. I like very much how you employed the soft and evenly diffused light to bring out the characteristics that make this place so special. I enjoyed very much both your description of the procedure of this capture and the result of it, that allows us to enjoy the awesome scenery from the comfort of our homes. Being there and achieving a photo like this, though, surely can't compare! Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,
delpeoples (50263) 2013-12-07 22:18
Ahh Serghei must be kicking himself - or want to kick you :) But I'm glad you got there anyway and had the opportunity to take such a fantastic shot. The colours and textures are stunning and I like how you've almost completely cropped out the sky, allowing us to concentrate on the river and those glorious rock structures. Excellent job, especially under what looks to be difficult light conditions.
Gigidusud (11621) 2013-12-09 6:41
I have only one word: fantastic!!! I like a lot!
Nice WS too! Beautiful memories for you.
emka (67259) 2013-12-12 23:57
Hi jason, Every time I see the photo from this place I think that I was so close but I missed it, wrrrr. But on the other hand, i would be mad there with my vertigo. To see my friends on their stomachs over the edge... no.... better just to see the shots. fantastic view.
