After 5 hours driving from Las Vegas to the South Rim, I had finally seen the wonderful Grand Canyon for the first time in my life. I just had 4 hours to see around and so I had to return another 5 hours to Las Vegas. Yes. 10 hours driving to see the great South Rim! And...of course the wonderful views worth my effort! Specially because the trip between Vegas and GCSR is beautiful as well, crossing Arizona and its landscapes. Of course that I would like to stay some more time during my next visit, and I will. But, this was the only way to finally visit it during this travel, and I am happy to had specially offered it to my 7yo son and to my father-in-law, since he is a geologist, and professor.
I would like to thanks to my friend Fulvio for all the tips he gave me, specially for suggesting the South Rim.
Here is one of my last shots and I did it hand held.

A brilliant capture of this marvelous location, the late afternoon light is truly spectacular.
Well worth the ten hour drive.
Superb in all respects.
jimmyjimmy (28) 2009-05-09 19:16
Great image, I would have tried to bring the sky into third of the image. The color and sharpness are wonderful. Great POV. TFS
wgreis (8267) 2009-05-09 20:07
Wow digo eu Zeca!
Que maravilha. Cores, POV... tudo!
gracious (20025) 2009-05-09 20:25

Wow, what a great shot! The light here is superb and I love the different tones in rock walls. The colours are stunning as well and there is nice transition of pink. Great POV and good details! Excellent work, Jose!
PJE (20758) 2009-05-09 20:51
Jose if this is your absolute first time at the Grand Canyon then I have to say congratulations for your incredible timing for this wonderful lighting at the canyon. I really love the color of the sky and highlights on the canyon are simply amazing. I hope to visit the canyon myself some day. Thank you for sharing.
Wandering_Dan (3449) 2009-05-09 20:58
Hi, Jose -
Beautifully done, and well worth the 10-hour drive. (You can stay overnight on the south rim, but you generally need a reservation a year or more in advance. On the other hand, you can sometimes get a last-minute reservation. After all, the Lord watches over fools and photographers!)
The light painting on the on the lower right is really a superb capture, especially as it is balanced against the deep shadows - which nonetheless hold detail - in the canyon. A great shot.
bostankorkulugu (41838) 2009-05-09 21:15
i didnt know there were some greenery at the grand canyon... a beautiful sunset shot ze, in spell-binding colours... um abraço... korkut

Hi Zeca, Wonderful colours you have capture well and presented in an appealing manner. The various strata are readily visble. Beautiful colours. I saw this flying to Denver from LA years ago but want to visit like you one day. TFS. Murray.
dareco (17134) 2009-05-09 22:45
The lighting is sensational!! Beautiful colors and excellent detail. TFS
sayeed_rahman (5987) 2009-05-09 23:17
Hello Jose Augusto
Great light..simply stunning..you must have had to try several exposures to get the best one..
the elevation..wish you had a telephoto..and created a tigher frame with just the GC..and the fading light..would have to be a fast one..like a 2.8 200mm..
but this is just great stuff
Buin (42254) 2009-05-09 23:31
Here you have caught a somehow solemn atmosphere - caused by this gorgeous light, this symphony of colours and the night which already is nestling in the depth. A picture to marvel at -but actually it's more a painting than a photo ...
Hand held! Hats off! ;-)
Greetings from thundery Germany - and have a nice Sunday!
batalay (34571) 2009-05-10 0:00
The South Rim is depicted in all its glory, and presented as a work of art of pastel colors. The interminable depths, the strata of geological levels... there is no doubt that having a geologist along would be a pleasure. When my children were very young I remember driving along the South Rim, and subsequently flying over the canyon several times on the way to Los Angeles. It is an awe inspiring view, and you've made it possible for us all to enjoy it vicariously.
delkoo (68) 2009-05-10 0:05
I had seldom seen such purple sky. clearly an image to lay your eye's on and look at a long long time.
Floydian (30970) 2009-05-10 0:44
I've been there, many many times, i know how it looks, and after all these years i also know it's impossible to photograh, that place is just to HUGE to picture it in to one frame. It's my favorite place to visit in the south-west, everytime it's like magic. What you did is crazy, driving that long for just a few hours, you should at least stayed there for the night.
I like your pp work, you have my blessings here, looks great in balance and in colour.
chawax (18387) 2009-05-10 1:06
This is a place where I dream to go ! You had a long drive to go there, but I think it worths it ! The view is spectacular and you had a great light.
PixelTerror (0) 2009-05-10 2:33
Thta's one good point of TE, getting to know places and how to approach them, I also visited several places that I had discovered here, and some more are on the list. Nice pov indeed and an image that shows a very nice warm dominant together with many details of the place
Have a nice day JY
lucasgalodoido (21049) 2009-05-10 4:05
pablominto (53744) 2009-05-10 4:25
An amazing play of colours!
The atmosphere seems to be very special at this time of day, with the pastel sky topping the gorgeous landscape formations...
Well framed with fine details!
vincz (19099) 2009-05-10 4:25
Beautiful, dreamy image with fanatstic colours. both in the sky and on the earth. Great work.

An awesome shot with really wonderful colour tones! The light at the setting sun is truly beautiful. Excellent POV and great details. A superb shot as hand held! Congratulations!
Philippe (11836) 2009-05-10 12:13
Hi, Jose. Wonderful light in the sky and on the rock layers of the Grand Canyon. The bottom part is already in the shade and this creates good contrast with the upper rocks. The trees on the right give a good depth to your image.
Have a nice day,
PaulVDV (20233) 2009-05-10 13:54
Excellent POV. Good to have included the green trees. But the magic is made by the wonderful pink and purple tones in the sky and also the beautiful colours of the rocks.
Best regards, Paul
cherryripe (21015) 2009-05-10 14:00
With such a short time you were so lucky with the light. Excellent pov with the land on the right contrasting well and adding depth and balance. Hope I get as lucky in exactly 2 months - staying overnight. Which viewpoint is this ?
Clementi (52514) 2009-05-10 14:06
the tonality of the light is exceptional, a marvelous landscape, indeed a beautiful job
Isabelle (9046) 2009-05-10 16:24
hispic (9619) 2009-05-10 20:32
Beautiful color and light! The gradation of the sky is very smooth and softly rendered, the characteristic tone of digital at the dark part also has details rendering you have achieved here.
Waylim (24940) 2009-05-10 21:43
It's not easy to have a good sunset image in GC, because by the time the sun is setting the canyon is all in the shadow and often too dark for a good photo with details. Here you did very well while the colors of the sky is really rich in tone, there is still nice definition on the canyon though it is a little high in noise but not bad. great shot with wonderful colors and good composition.
ribeiroantonio (22637) 2009-05-10 22:12
patdeph (35748) 2009-05-10 22:26
the light and the colours are exceptional, truly beautiful, they enhance so well the beauty of this wonderful landscape!I love the softness and the harmony of the tones, and the contrast brought by the green part of the right!Splendid!
AiresSantos (56155) 2009-05-11 0:07
As cores estao magnificas. Excelente definicao e detalhes
Um abraco e boa semana
bobocortis (15946) 2009-05-11 4:07
What a magical landscape! I like the warm - almost violet - after sunset light. There's a good perspective too, thanks to the fg's cliffs.
anto95 (1840) 2009-05-11 6:07
fantastic sunrise in the Grand Canyon!Wonderful light and colours, great contrast picture.
maltese (22643) 2009-05-11 9:09

De l'excellent travail
fulvio52 (8314) 2009-05-12 15:10
So, you finally made it to The Greatest Earth On Show, one of the biggest challenges for a photographer!
I appreciate you driving a total of 10 hours to see the Grand Canyon, that's the spirit! You only had 4 hours to spend out there, but even 5 minutes on that magic rim would have been worth the drive. I've been standing many times on this spot, and I'll be here within 2 and a half months again... Great shot, my friend, truly GREAT. Wonderful colors and atmosphere! And... THANK YOU for mentioning my name in your note, I greatly appreciate.
Have a good day, I'll be seeing you.
xavshot (69835) 2009-05-12 21:39
Amaz (11475) 2009-05-13 2:04
otima composição e lindíssimas cores !!
siolaw (38018) 2009-05-13 5:01
You got such gloriouss colors in the sky! They make the whole picture just glow. Nice details and a breathtaking point of view for sure!
Longroute (19392) 2009-05-13 7:02
The sweet colour of the sunset add magic and atmosphere to this classic view of GC. What to say in front of a natural spectacle like that?
Every time I see the GC I remember a true annedocte someone told me once long ago: two American ladies get down from the airconditioned coach which has brought them to visit the GC, they have a quick glance to it from a view point (probabily similar to the one from where you shot this picture) and then one says to the other: let's go and have a coffee! (LOL)
How many TE members behave like that in front of a photo?
A photo one is never tired to look at.
carper (96) 2009-05-13 8:25
fantastic place, jose,
very good view, your are there on a good time, fantastic atmosphere, good photo job here.
have a good day.
josepmarin (57459) 2009-05-13 10:43
leo61 (0) 2009-05-13 22:28
A wonderful landscape in wonderful light. The red tones are awsome and your POV excellent.A great shot!
pboehringer (770) 2009-05-14 10:39
Handheld? Que amador terrivel! ;-)
O ceu e a parte superior estao perfeitas.
danos (82615) 2009-05-14 23:24
excellent subdued shot of the nightfall in Grand Canyon.I like the play of the light and shadows on the rocks as these colour pinks of the sky.Informative your note as Fulvio help.Well done.
Have a nice weekend,Danos
Cricri (100205) 2009-05-15 10:29
Good Week end
bona (12183) 2009-05-18 11:35
angela926 (1884) 2009-05-18 16:50
WOW! A truly amazing capture, the colors are spectacular!!
excellent compo and pov, superb sharpness and wonderful light.
Emile (20350) 2009-05-18 21:45
Superb view of the Grand Canyon during the last sunlight's of the evening, very well captured, beautiful colors in the sky. It was worth the long trip.
InasiaJones (31230) 2009-05-18 23:48
When I saw your high score (highly deserved), I thought to myself that you might not need another 2 points...
But then again, I might be the one who will lead it to the 200 points, so let me offer you my admiration for this dedication of driving 10 hours in order to spend 4 hours down there, but ultimately to achieve a great shot. The light is very warm and flattering for this iconic landscape.
Graal (95007) 2009-05-20 23:45
great landscape. Friends all told You. I like the POV, composition and colours also. Well photojob.
Tue (25798) 2009-05-21 7:17
A breathtaking view, the colours of the rocks are great and well saturated and the soft colours of the sky are wonderful too. Thanks a lot for sharing!

Excellent soft colours! I really love the different tones in the pic.
marietom (34607) 2009-05-23 1:08
trekks (14348) 2009-05-24 5:34
I really admire this beauty of both the photo capture and the natural landscape with the soft tones of color and superb rock formation of this famous place. Worth the long drive but I agree, you should stay and wait for sunrise :) version.
Very well applied pp work to create this superb effect of the evening. The exposure handheld is not easy to achieve good result but you did well here. To show the highlight on the rock cliff is a most difficult work when applying pp.
JCG (35129) 2009-05-25 11:01
The luminosity is superb on this photograph of the Grand Canyon giving an atmosphere very original on this vertiginous landscape. A sight very pleasant to look at. Thank you José.
With all my friendships and with soon,
jemaflor (79872) 2009-05-25 11:31
Superb light with a lovely pink tone for this great landscape, congratulations for this result. Good choice for this well balanced composition.
belido (19934) 2009-05-27 5:28
Fabulosa!
ahmetgedikli (25372) 2009-06-04 22:40
Superb scenery... Very good POV and DOF on your photo. The light and colors are beautiful.
avene (12675) 2009-06-06 20:20
you have no idea how lucky you are to have such a great shot from the Grand Canyon. when we came to see it just a week ago, it was filled with dull gray clouds, no light at all... :(
love the colorus in your shot, the pink and purple sky is just the right backdrop for the fascinating rock formations. great shot, my compliments.
ruisc_pt (10343) 2009-07-03 0:41
