Alstrom Point, Taken in the morning with a view of Gunsight Butte and Padre Bay and a high viewpoint over Lake Powell. I was really here for the sunset, though it was a nice day, the sun light was very strong with dark shadow, I was hoping after the sunset it will have some nice sky on top, but it was cloudy at the western horizon, The sun just went into the dark clouds, turning gray and dark. Normally, the morning is not good for photo here, because of the backlighting and haze, but this morning turn out to be okay with some clouds to block the direct light from the sun, the whole landscape is nicely illuminated.
This is part of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. We drove for about 3 hours on a bumpy dirt road. the last 2 miles or so was so bad we were driving up rocks that were like rocky stairs. We ended up staying out here camping through the night with no facility. We had enough food and water for the night.
High-clearance 4WDs is recommended, but any high-clearance vehicle is acceptable with good tires. Road is not passable when there is rain. You will have to pass a decent size creek with running water depending on the season, the water can be higher or lower.
See Previous post for anther shot taken later when the sun was brighter.
Good Morning Lake Powell

Hey Way, this is an amazing photo indeed. I love the clear view of this canyon. Very sharp. And super wide, covering almost all things there. The sky is just wonderful. And the colors are awesome. Wow, full frame and 17mm, that works out well. Well done. Sothy

Back to your US western shots !
To your gorgeous shots, should I say !
It's composed as we're all taught in all photo schools, the FG is superb in itself, not to mention the icing on the cake with the little yellow bush, the chromatic blue/orange juxtaposition works perfectly
Just a bit disapointed by the sky, somehow
best to you Way
have a nice evening
PS Glen Canyon in Arkansas !?
prabut (3548) 2010-02-17 10:17
Excellent composition, great colors and light. Very good vertical frame. Well presented clouds. Wonderful job.
Bergenphotos (2198) 2010-02-17 10:18
This landscape with its orange cliffs is quite different to the Norwegian, but somehow it reminds me of Lofoten. However, everything is great here, colours, composition, POV and so on, beautiful! I especially like that the warm colour of the cliffs make a perfect contrast to the blue cold water. TFS.
baba_flies (8829) 2010-02-17 10:23
WOWWWW! Wasn't it me that was complaining about grey clouds and rain in the desert ... now you show me how to use this light and how well grey clouds work. A great lesson! It is an amazing landscape, okay men-made in some ways, I agree, but still a fascinating corner to visit. What a great experience to sleep along the road side, a little scary maybe and yet something different. I bet you had a fantastic night sky. Guessli ... Barbara.
pauloog (11739) 2010-02-17 11:01
A fabulous spectacle, the lake and the dry rocks, as far as can see the eye. Good back-light photo with the clouds avoiding the direct sunlight. Well done.

this is an endless landscape...the eye runs till the infinity...and a great contrast between the sun burnt tones and the blue sky and water...
rlrad (1845) 2010-02-17 11:46
Wow, what beautiful color on this lake and the terrain. It was worth that long bumpy drive in, I would say. The sweeping vista of this one even surpasses the last entry and I thought it couldn't get much better than that.
Great job, once again!
ivtchik (734) 2010-02-17 12:26

a part of Arizona I did not often see
great POV and depth
ktanska (22692) 2010-02-17 23:44
Surreal scene which is absolutely beautiful at the same. You were lucky with the weather, you need to have a cloud in front of the sun on that backlight. Strong deep perspective. Brilliant colors.
emka (64182) 2010-02-17 23:56
Hi Way, Indeed, delightful view. I cannot imagine how it looked like before the constructiom of Glen dam. for me , the Powell lake looks very attractive. fantastic shot.
Longroute (19392) 2010-02-18 1:24
Delightful morning and delightful and stunning lake! This place really seems the set of a science-fiction movie! The combination of colours is so fine and the eye gets lost with so many beautiful details. Perfect vertical framing showing a gorgious sky and allowing a great depth. A photo you can really be proud of.
mkamionka (27089) 2010-02-18 1:46
I did not get there, but I really regret.
Plenty of interesting places are available there rather with AWD and high clearance. I have the reason to come back again with a better car.
Beautiful vertical composition. The colors are incredible of course. It does not look like the Earth at all. Sky is so rich and clouds make a great play with the light buy honestly the landscape is so incredible that the sky does not matter for me. The light in the whole shot is superb. It is literally a pleasure to look at it and contemplate it.
eversmile (11628) 2010-02-18 2:13
Superb!!! The light is fabulous; I love the colors and contrasts. It looks very warm and vibrant. The framing is perfect, with the rocks opening the scenery, an even a little discrete bush of flowers, in harmony with the striking and gleaming hues of the rocks. A beautiful sky too. Congratulations!
janusz2054 (306) 2010-02-18 3:11

avene (12675) 2010-02-18 11:40
this is a good example of what a powerful camera can produce in the hands of somebody who knows how to use it :) I don't have to tell you that the photo is great, you know it yourself. I love the varying red and orange tones, and in the vertical composition the foreground works really well to point the viewer towards the rising sun beyond the lake. textures, light, colours - everything is just right. I have to get back to this place in hopes to see light like this :)
s_lush (16054) 2010-02-18 23:56
This is one more great shot of the Lake Powell, with the brighter colors, absolutely beautiful foreground and highly expressive sky. As usual, the photographic qualities are beyond all comparison. Absolutely excellent job!
holmertz (31340) 2010-02-19 3:44
Another fine capture of the kind of strange, almost surreal scenery that seems to be your specialty. There is a beautiful texture of the calm water and those clouds look like they were the imaginations of an ancient painter.
gillou01 (487) 2010-02-19 3:49
have a nice day
Elaine_Blath (8509) 2010-02-19 4:48

paololg (31446) 2010-02-19 15:28
A masterpiece, dear friend, really unbelievable the beauty and the quality of this photo. It's amazing to see the endless depth of field and the perfect sharpness up to the horizon. This suggestive landscape seems three-dimensional. Sincere compliments, dear Way!
Ciao, have a nice week end!
cherryripe (21015) 2010-02-20 9:17
I still haven't got around to posting a photo but we did have a pretty sunset from the view point within Glen Canyon national park - and this after a day of cloud and rain. Of course the view point was very different and flatter than yours which has so much depth. Just love the details in the foreground with the pretty flowers. The contrasting colours are attractive too. If there was one place on our trip I would have spent an extra night, it would have been here.
axiotea (21647) 2010-02-20 9:50
Both of the photos show a breathtaking landscape! The sky plays also an important role as it added dynamism. There is a great sense of depth too and lovely saturated colours.
Very nice ;)
InasiaJones (30030) 2010-02-20 23:54
Major league stuff here; I know that deserted landscapers from TE would have raved about this shot.
Just for the sharpness you've managed to get, it's already something to kneel down and praise. I know how you can't resist to include something in the foreground and you've found yourself a nice bouquet of wild thing here, although the size isn't significant to be called a foreground, but the rock formation a few feet after is nice enough.
I like all the subtle earth tones combined to the aqua/turquoise/teal water. Great capture of the sky above and clever PP to get the best from the sun and the ground.
You're doing good stuff and you know it.
magalik (6101) 2010-02-21 11:28
I write again my comment beacause I had the bad idea to put in it a bad character HTML and my comment has been erased...
8-o : it's my head discovering this shot.
It's so beautiful ! The sight and your shot.
I think it's difficult to have a landscape more colored than this one. I saw red landscape in Corsica and I thought it's not possible to see nicer landscapes but when I look at your shot, I'm wondering...
The quality of your shot is perfect and allows us to really appreciate the sight. I'm wondering if you have really the same camera like ours.
Sometimes, there are shots which receive a lot of comments and which don't deserve them according to me but this one really desserve them. Great work.
For each shot you post, I think you couldn't do better next time and every time, you succeed to surprise me.
Im' waiting the next...
Have a good week.
ChrisJ (91292) 2010-02-21 16:43
Wow! A spectacular vista of the Glen Canyon with good sharpness & wonderful warm vs cold color contrasts, between the red & blue. I like the yellow fg flowers, orange earth, then the red rocks, contrasting against the blue water in the lake. Tfs!

a great image, from the reddish foreground to the cloud formation well closing the top of the picture
PixelTerror (0) 2010-02-22 22:19
Delightful image, from this pov you seem on a launchpad to get into this deep landscape where the suceeding islets and the coming back clouds give a near 3d effect
have a nice day JY
shevchenko (18725) 2010-02-22 23:16
Clear to see rays of morning sunlight stretching out from the thick clouds, good vertical format and good perspective, nice to see arid land surrounding by big part of water, unique landscape, distinct photo in artistic color, well done.

Ola Way ,
Que lugar maravilhoso a paisagem e muito bonita com estas montanhas de terra vermelha em contraste com a agua verde , gostei muito do céu , bom uso da foto na vertical , parabéns!!
Um abraço Gonçalo
rginer (861) 2010-02-25 9:38
Great, fabulous photographs, both. Perhaps I prefer the second one when the sun is brighter; I think it looks more 'natural' more alive, but certainly it's a splendid and delightful morning. Thanks for sharing with us your awesome photographs which shows us different landscapes really unknown for me. It's worth to drive more than three hours and be there, wait, look and feel any kind of emotions. This you have done it very well in your photographs.
Wish you a nice day.
kiks (11601) 2010-02-27 8:11

I remember your last post well, and this is an absolute treat as well! The composition, he colours, the clarity are all of the highest order. The FG is superb with the highlight being the small tuft of yellow flowers. A feast for the eyes indeed!

Hi Way, and here I see the boy who does not like early mornings, wakes early for this gift from nature. Excellent vertical framing and the colours are so rich. Your trademark large foreground is so full of texture and colour, it's a feast for the eyes. And that sky, wow. Congratulations and I wish you a good weekend (as it is Friday evening here, I am about to start on some cheese and biscuits with a little wine, will drink 1 or 8 in your honour ;) Lisa
BluSimo (9392) 2010-06-24 16:41
The fire only lacks, there are all other natural elements, fused in excellent way in this spectacular photo. I have not seen something like this before. It's winner the choice of the vertical frame, within which all it is perfect.
francio64 (38254) 2011-08-10 11:42
davvero affascinante questo canyon con il lago che si insedia tra le rocce.
Ottima gestione della luce ed eccellente resa cromatica.
Compliments and TFS!
Robert1969 (6650) 2012-02-08 22:46
The great point of view and composition creates a
beautiful depth in this picture and the vertical
position strengthened this.
Also is the picture nice calmness, I can watch it
for hours and hours. The light management is as
alway also great.
The yellow bush in the foreground is a nice break
in this rugged landscape...It goes to my favorites.
sacimar (25969) 2012-02-29 10:08
this is another excellent image of your gallery, I like it, the view is impressive and the vertical composition was well chosen, nice job,
Vague (301) 2012-09-03 7:15
How are you, my friend? Did you have a nice summer?

maloutim (9479) 2013-11-08 0:46
One never tires of admiring your beautiful pictures of the wonders of nature in the west of the US.
You mad a great job here despite the unfavorable weather.
Your capture of the dramatic sky is great and so is the contrast between the turquoise river and the reddish rock formation.
Excellent vertical composition with good DOF that leads our eyes to the hilly horizon.
Do you know what the mountain is ?
Thanks for sharing.
