Photographer’s Note

The many islands of the Alexander Archipelago of Southeast Alaska have dense temperate rainforests which receive an average of thirteen feet of rainfall annually. Because of these weather conditions, we are understandably enchanted with the occasional sunny day and get outside, if we can, to experience the warmth of the returning sun. Springtime cloudforms are particularly extravagant at this time of year, and wherever you look, you can usually see squalls associated with these clouds.

This shot was taken from the South Point Higgins Beach, twelve miles north of Ketchikan. The Inside Passage, on the left, provides a meandering pathway among the islands for passenger ships, fishing boats, and barges which bring supplies to the state from the lower 48.
