Photographer’s Note

To say that this is a common structure in Alaska, or even specifically in Homer, is somewhat misleading. As there are obviously no noticeable zoning restrictions there, the nature of building a cabin in Alaska is highly personal. Basically: it can be as beautiful or as ugly as you like; dependent mainly on your own personal aesthetic as well as financial situation.

This cabin, lovingly dubbed "The Silo" (and very, very similar to the hero's home in Sylvain Chomet's THE TRIPELETS OF BELLEVILLE), this cabin sits about 1/3 mile off the main road in a bevy of spruce trees. Unfortunately, most of the trees in the area are now dead--a product of Japanese Bark Beetle destruction.

I took this photo with a dingy little disposable camera, I think. Just point and shoot, of course. The fact is, I think a lot of the photos I took with this camera were decent, but the 1-Hour photo girl at the Target in Seattle, Washington screwed them up in her uneducated attempt to do a negative scan onto floppy disc for me. Oh, well.

I did some touch-up in PS: worked the levels to reduce the wash-out, did some color correction to green-up the shrubbery (which truly is brilliant there) and cropped out the bad scanning-borders.
