Photographer's Note

It is not an easy task for a Mama bear to catch fishes to feed the cubs. She is very protective and will keeps her cubs close by at all time, however, she needed to feed herself and the cubs, so she had to leave them nearby to go fishing. There are many other adult bear around, the male bears will kill or hurt young bears. Mama bear with cubs will general try to stay away from others, but at this time of year, during salmon run, they need to feed as much to get their body fat before the winter return and they need to go in hibernations. Generally the bear will eat at the river, but bear with cubs will take it back to the cave or secluded place to eat.
Photo quality is not great due to low light down in the river between hills and thick vegetation.

Photo taken at Anan Creek, located on the Tongass National Forest (35 miles) South East of Wrangell, Alaska, accessible only by boat or float plane. Anan Wildlife Observatory is world renowned for its extraordinary bear viewing opportunities. Home to one of Southeast Alaska's largest pink salmon runs, it attracts a significant number of bears, both black and brown, as well as hundreds of eagles, seals and other wildlife that rely on the salmon as a major food source.

It is a short walking distance from the dock to the viewing area, there are rangers in the front and in the back with weapon, just in case. We had to make lots of noise to scare them away. Usually they are busy fishing, and they avoid people, but occasionaly you will come too close and have to back away and wait till they leave. We have a viewing platform and we stay inside a camaflage hut down near the river to see them catching fishes.
