The Jenkins Plantation home and Museum

It has survived wars, floods, wind and weather. Since 1835 a large brick house, essentially a mansion in its time and place, has stood sentinel on the banks of the Ohio River. It is the home of the Jenkins family, the most notable of whom was General Albert Gallatin Jenkins, C.S.A. His family owned more than 4,000 acres and maintained a successful plantation at Green Bottom, in what was then western Virginia.

In an area where both Union and Confederate sympathies were strongly held, Jenkins was a figure who was either despised or admired. His Border Rangers made bold raids into the enemy territory of Ohio. Educated in Pennsylvania and having served in the U.S. Congress, he faced the ultimate question of all civil wars: to choose which side he could in good conscience commit. This aspect of the site is most appealing to history enthusiasts and those enjoying dramatic story.

Not only were the Jenkins family part and parcel of the Plantation, but so were more than 50 slaves who worked and lived at Green Bottom. Imagine the feelings of those destined to be treated as property, living within yards of potential freedom. Their story is another important part of this site.

The house has been investigated for paranormal activity, according to some reading I've done and found to indeed, HAVE weird things going on there.

Hi Shelly,
Wonderful historic site seen in striking colors and sharp details. Great note about the head of the house being torn during the civil war and the plight of the 50 slaves.
Regards, Tom

"Once upon a time"... yes, somehow mysterious...

shelly,
you have captured the essence of this plantation house very well. the sky is very friendly here but you very well make up for it with your excellent use of light on the green. well done.

Hi Shelly.

Beautifull.....
Inspite of all the wars, floods, wind and weather, it's really amazing that this mansion stood still...
You have made this memorable within your frame giving it a great tribute, relating it well with nature.

CONGRATS, dear SHELLY, for this share.

PS: In my language,MALAYALAM, there's a Movie titled:
Bhargavi Nilayam - 1964,
(The Ghost House)
written by
Vaikom Mohammed Basheer.

A novelist arrives in a desolate mansion to stay, where he encounters the beautiful ghost Bhargavi. He starts writing her story, a tragic tale about her love for a poet and her evil cousin who ruined the affair. As the novelist reads out the story to the ghost, the cousin turns up and tries to kill the novelist. They fall into a well but the ghost helps the hero out, leaving the villain to drown.

YOUR IMAGE MAKES ME REMEMBER THIS MOVIE.

Hi Shelly, beautiful photo!Cela makes a little cold in the back your comment, especially the end. I like framing and your composition.
Cordially.

I like that you've chose to shoot this from a distance with the march in between you and the house. I think this adds a sense of place and envrionment. Great note too.

Good subject on the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade Shelly, nice perspective naturally framed by the grasses .. good eye

Hello Shelly,

A superb note accompanying the historic mansion at Jenkins Plantation. The photograph of the house shows it nestled in the thick woods, in a scene resonating with solitude. The depth of field is very good, with both the brush in the foreground, the house and trees in the background all appearing well-defined.

Warm regards, Shelly.
