Photographer’s Note
Every August (during the HOTTEST time of year) we have in my hometown the "Rib Fest". These guys travel around with their giant barbeque pits and compete for money and prizes for the best ribs, barbeque sauce, etc. It is just unimaginable to me to stand over those smoky, hot fires and cook all day in 90+ degree heat. They sure serve up some fine tasting ribs and chicken, though.

Shelly,
Nice angle to take this photo. Good color combination and element arrangement. It brings viewer's eyes to the man then to the tasty ribs and chicken legs. The smoky air is just wonderful. I feel hungry already.

The subject is what drew me to this shot. I've slaved over many a slab of spare ribs especially during football season (which certainly isn't as hot as in this shot) while cooking for friends and family.
While this may be a mundane photo to many; I've experienced this at "rib-fests" as well as putting in my own grill time which I plan on doing much more if time and health permits. Your shot really captures the mood, smoke, aroma etc.
Thanks for sharing.

The subject is really interesting - kind of local culture or something like that.
But technically it could have been better: especially I mean the noise (eg. if you look at the man's arm: you can notice pixels; the same with this metal lid)
I don't know too much in this area but you could think of using (If you don't already) some noise reducing software (like 'noise ninja' or 'neat image') or try to refrain from high ISO settings in your camera

Hi Shelly,
Since you requested feedback here's mine, this photo is for sure not the best of your gallery but there are a few things to tell here... first the composition, I don't mind you posting an easy barbecue snapshot, it belongs to life anyway and I'm a great barbie addict. But you should invest a bit of care in the composition, here the overlapping lady in the background just ruins the shot, waiting a little while for her to go was the solution. Then the second point that I dislike here is the technical quality, I'm sorry to tell it's terrible, it looks like a view shot with a poor quality mobile phone, or at the longest extend of a digital zoom, which can be even worse, look at the man's arm, the t-shirt above his arm or the dark area in front of him. To some degree I saw your recent billard photo was affected by this too. In order not to sound only negative, I'd like to say that I appreciate that you took the time to write a note, a point often forgotten but essential to me and that some of your other photos are way better than this one, however I wanted to highlight here the composition issue and I hope quality will get better once you have the D70, which is definitely a significant step forward.
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves
