Photographer’s Note

Two shiploaders of Southern Coal Pier 6 located at Laberts Point Coal Terminal, in Norfolk.
This is the largest coal-transloading terminal in the Northern Hemisphere. Norfolk Southern Railway Company
operates this facility on the Elizabeth River to transfer coal from rail cars to ships. Annual through-put capacity ia 48 million tons. Coal originates primarily in Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky.
Those two shiploaders, the heart of Pier 6, permit the facility to load two vessels simultaneously by means of
twin tandem rotary dumpers that empty the rail cars and feed the loaders for a combined dumping capacity of up to 8,000 tons per hour.
