STUDY IN COLORS #2, a photo from Virginia, South

CHIHULY #2

The present photo is a sequel to STUDIES IN COLORS #1 in which a group of visitors were seen at Dale Chihuli Blown-Glass Exhibition in Virginia. In Ann Jackman's poetic description, it resembled "... the waterfall of colour tumbling down on the people." The camera I had used in that photo was a compact Nikon Coolpix S9300. For the present photo the camera is a more elaborate Nikon D200. When the area was relatively uninhabited by visitors, I set the camera on the floor and put it on timer mode in order to minimize hand-held motion.

From my earlier note about the artist, Dale Chihuly, his legion of fans are familiar with the beautiful colors that he achieves in his blown glass creations. The collaboration of painters and glass blowers is not a new phenomenon. In the early 16th century, the Venetian Master Titziano (Titian) had collaborated with the glassblowers on the Island of Murano near Venice to learn about their secrets in achieving certain colors, especially the reds. Subsequently, Raphael hired away one of Titian’s assistants and his colors became more vibrant, especially the reds. Three-hundred and fifty years later, the French Impressionists were able to get their hands on oxides produced in exceedingly hot furnaces used in the Industrial Revolution. Cross fertilization of disciplines frequently leads to immense creativity.

I recently created a new group theme, Symphonies in Color, adding this photo into the collection. The expression, "A symphony of colors," is the way the great Expressionist painter Vincent van Gogh, in a letter to his brother Théo, described the works of French landscape artist Jules Dupré (1811-1889). Van Gogh's words are also appropriate in describing the still life depicted here. I welcome other TE members to add to the theme.

Hi There Bulent,

The beauty of this shot lies in its abstractism. If the note is not there, one would imagine them to be coral reef and not glass. For this abstractism the credit goes to the composition. Also for such a subject with multi-reflective numerous surfaces, management of light is a task and i see it has been done very well. No flash shot it seems. Wonder if an HDR attempt would have been interest, provided these were still and no crowd traffic. But its different and i like it.

Firstly I love colour - therefore I am drawn to this image for this reason.
The title is excellent as are your highly informative notes.
Looking at your photo there are some strange & interesting shapes here - quite amazing.
I would really enjoy the Exhibition... I shall have to add it to my already extensive list of things to see.

Hello Bulent,

Effective tight framing here with the overall impression being a pastiche of plastic or cellophane petals with a few sea urchin sand dollars thrown in for good measure! Good sharpness, lighting contrasts and saturation. Nice textural details in the wavy patterns. Tfs!

It is indeed a study in colors, an awesome study in colors. I'm going to the Bellagio today to take pictures of the spring flowers, and you just gave an incentive to take pictures of similar glass artwork in their lobby. Good lighting and dof with nice details. Wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.

The colors certainly are vibrant, and the designs are beautiful. I like your decision to fill the entire frame with glass. The light filters in differently throughout the shot, creating interesting patterns.

Dear Bulent,

You know, colors are very subjective, everyone man or woman experience color on an other way.
I've implant (multifocal) lenses since four year, and the colors are a lot different against formerly, according the Doctor is this normal, I get more intensive colors as blue and red.
I like your wonderful picture
Sharpness and clarity are superb.
Excellent composition, nice captured.

Now this is a colorful picture, somehow that reminds me of a swarm of jellyfish in the sea. Very ingenious idea to take this photo and the result proves you absolutely right. Great colors and shapes, well worth the trouble taken.

We saw this display at the exhibition also! You captured a beautiful portion of the Persian ceiling. I wanted to take photos of the whole thing, each glass piece was so beautiful and unique.

Another fascinating look at this Chihuly sculpture, which looks not unlike a tidepool viewed from below. The way these forms and colors transmit the light above them is fantastic, painting with their reflections. Thanks for this closeup as well - good to see it head on in addition to seeing its effect in your previous shot.

when I saw the thumbnail, I thought "wow, what´s that?"
Sea plants? See animals? Leaves in fall?
It´s none of it.
It´s artwork.
And if it had been something else, if it had been one of the above mentioned things I would have nevertheless called it artwork. Artwork created by nature.
I like the close-up POV and the tight crop.

Merhaba Bulent Bey. I wrote a critique recently for this photo and it mysteriously disappeared. This is a natural progression from the previous titillating shot as now we have a closer view of the marvelous work. This picture is all about colours & shapes...brings in strong elements of surrealism & imagination! I am left wondering even after looking at the picture for quite a while about the picture. It is frankly quite unqiue as if shells and mussels have become translucent in their various colours and gloss. Amazing!
