Photographer's Note

Here's a third photo from the Cloyd's Battle Reenactment series. This is the First Stuart Mounted Artillery firing a volley. At the time of the US Civil War, the only propellant available was black powder which produced clouds of dense white smoke. It also limited the range and accuracy. Most of the cannons were smooth bore but some were rifled which significantly increased the range at which they were accurate. Explosive shell were effective out to several miles. The reenactors do not use projectiles for safety reasons but still the muzzle blast and smoke are impressive.
