Photographer's Note

SPECKLED PAINT Shot on 3/14/2008 7:40 am

The month of March is frequently described by the old adage, “In like a lion, out like a lamb.” Dramatically different conditions can prevail — from cold and windy to warm and sunny. Just two weeks ago on March 14 I was driving to work along my usual trajectory that takes me through the historic Fredericksburg Battlefield. Through the trees I could see the sun just rising, and creating a subtle golden glow. I made a quick pit stop in order to shoot this photograph, and, just five minutes later, to shoot Sunrise Over Marye’s Heights. The coloration in this bucolic scene suggests the last throes of winter, no buds on trees yet, but a speckling of colors — red, orange, green… and that is the aspect I tried to accentuate in this photograph.
