IN LIKE A LION
The month of March is frequently characterized with the expression, In like a lion, out like a lamb! Alas, it snowed all night on February 28, assuring that March would indeed be ushered in like a lion, with 20-25 cm (8-10 inches) of snow blanketing central Virginia. An accompanying drop in temperature kept the ground shrouded in pristine white snow during the next few days. I shot the photo from the side of myhouse, looking north toward Washington, DC, 80 km (50 miles) away. The view is of my backyard, with a pond too small to even have a name. The beech tree with leaves still brown and shriveled from last fall hang from otherwise bare branches, adding some color highlight.
The rolling hills and valleys are part of Lees Hill, its name commemorating the site of a battle that took place during the American Civil War (1861-65). On a numbingly cold few days during December of 1862, over a hundred thousand soldiers equally divided between General Lees Confederate Forces (South) and General Grants Union Forces (North) faced each other in mortal combat. It is a poignant view, both beautiful and sad.

Merhaba Bulent Bey. Nice complementary piece to the previous one. Pristine snow, lovely pond, even if it has no name.Excellent exposure that captures the snow's texture.you even caught the subtle shadow of the birch upon the snow. As for the slaughter, just as well you don't believe in ghosts. Selamlar. Klaudio.

Hi Bulent, Wonderful winter view. So much snow still. I like this almost black-and-white photo with constrasting yellow beech leaves. Splendid atmosphere. You have a wonderful view from your backyard, with forest and pond..We have in Polish saying - In March like in a pot - it means probably the same that the weather is rather unpredictable.
ribeiroantonio (22637) 2009-03-15 0:23
You did manage the light very well in here and the result is a superbly exposed snow with plenty of good detail. The vertical frame is good with the making the left side. Well done. Is it still cold?

Merhaba Sevgili Hocam,
Kontrast ve,gölün,kendine bizi çeken görüntüsü süper!

Gorgeous winter scenery! Snow, water, leaves, brunches and a house compirise a holistic composition that takes there to "see" it with our own eyes! Very well framed too! Thank you for sharing! Regards Stella

You chose an excellent angle, this create very nice depth and perspective.

This is scenery that is very foreign to me living here in Queensland, when I lived in Victoria I occasionally headed for the snow fields, but to have this at your back door... how wonderful. Beautifully captured. The stillness of your unnamed pond giving a nice reflection, the house in between the trees and the slight splash of brown and blue from the trees and sky creates a lovely composition.
snunney (100076) 2009-03-15 3:07
A fine winter landscape to hasten in the much awaited spring :-) The scene is well composed and has a number of various elements to hold the attention without being over busy. Good exposure management resulting in 'natural' looking snow. The reaming dead leaves on the branches bring some nice splashes of colour.
BWJ (3094) 2009-03-15 5:01
It is a great winter scene - a winter wonderland! Your viewpoint is well chosen. I like how you framed the photo with the tree and overhanging branches accentuating the amount of snow. The brown leaves still clinging to the tree from last fall add additional interesting detail and lovely color contrast. Perhaps the saying "March - In Like a Lion - Out Like a Lamb" will be true this year.
Have a good Sunday.

Hello Bulent Bey,
I admired the view from your backyard. The nature wore an amazing cloth and the atmosphere is superb. Maybe everybody is willing to reach the spring, but I like this snow view a lot maybe because we do't have any here in Izmir.
Have a nice sunday,

The brown beech leaves and the patch of blue sky add wonderful touches of colour to an otherwise B&W scene. The other eye-catcher is the reflection in the pond. Well composed vertical format image with the tree as frame on the left. Let's hope the 'lamb' arrives soon.
Actually it's a pleasant 13°C here today.

Merhaba, Bulent -
This shot nicely captures a feeling of wet snow - though perhaps I'm projecting a bit because I grew up with it! Nice use of the curved tree limbs as a framing device, and although the house in the rear looks like it should blend in and be hard to spot, in fact it's quite quickly seen.

Bulent: never at a loss for words, it's your images that complete the verbal-visual composition. regards, c

A stunningly beautiful winter scene taken just two weeks before spring in the same latitude where I live. I wonder how this beautiful place will look like in a couple of weeks. You used very wisely the FG tree and the bush covered with snow to frame wonderfully the piece of lake on the BG. I feel eager about walking forward to see the view behind the bushes in the middle.
The resisting brown leaves and the blue of the sky give a nice touch of colour in the mostly monochromatic image. The camouflaged cabin or house is a little prize for the best observers.

Ciao dear Bulent,
what a beautiful snowfall! :-) Pleasant image, with a beautiful light and so many details to admire. I like a lot the chromatic contrast of the dead leaves with the white of the snow. You have really a beautiful garden! Fortunately in Italy, in the lowlands, it doesn't snow anymore and we can finally see some flower in the grass. Compliments!
Ciao, have a nice week!

Nice snow scene - looks like a thick blanket covering the ground and trees.
Pretty landscape shooting!

Bulent, nice one. Fortunately we did not get his so heavily in western Mass. The composition is great and the bit of blue sky working it's way into the tree sets off the snow very nicely. Great capture.

Just at the moment we have here the first days with some spring in the air you bring us this huge amount of snow. In Holland we say about the weather in March: Maart roert zijn staart (Lit. March moves its tail) (March brings gales).
gunbud (34066) 2009-03-17 17:41
Beautiful winter scene with the wet late season snow clinging and weighing down the trees that surround the lovely pond.
Hard to image that this tranquil setting was once the scene for so much blood shed.
Up in my neck of the woods this storm missed by about 75 miles only getting about a 1/2 inch that night.

While at Versailles, we have very pleasant afternoon last few days, with temperatures in the sun of 16° C, this is a picture that contrasts and that reminds me of our beautiful winter !!! I see that you have a beautiful view of the back of your house... Pretty winter scry with deep snow, which gives a lot of softness to the image. For my part I look forward to the spring... Thank you Bülent.
With all my friendships and soon
PS: I appreciate much your nice words on my last photo.
avene (12675) 2009-03-18 10:57
I think the shot is a little too dark, I'd like to see the snow shine and sparkle, especially since the blue sky indicates the weather was not too gloomy, there is some sunshine.
the tree is just in the right place to create a natural frame for this wintry scene. nice view, but I'm more than ready for the spring :)

Beautiful photo, dear Bulent!
Kind regards, um abraço!

it looks cold, but still incredibly beautiful. A beautiful winter landscape, captured under fantastic conditions. The light is very nice. I love the view of the little pond in the background and also the frost snow on the trees looks great. Very nice and well composed view.
All the best.

Hello Professor 'A'
Those withered leaves with their brown colours creates a good contrast with the snow. Indeed we are not habituated in seeing scenes like this...coming from Mumbai yesterday where the temperatures soared to 41 degrees Celcius to Delhi, slightly cooler & I think of this snowscape as something so very 'exotic'. Good framing with the tree trunk on the left.
With Warmest Regards
Hellas (6945) 2009-04-10 0:52
this is wonderful! The composition and the details are simply great. I just love the soft contrast of the reflection on the lake's surface and those brown leaves still on branches.
The tree trunk with the branches framed very well the whole synthesis. I like also the blue of sky, adding a lot to the scene!

Wonderful snow scene, representing the true meaning of winter. It looks romantic and at the same time it symbolizes cold. Fine color hues with high sharpness. Well done
Thanks for your critique of my Fishing port scene from Yan. Actually the tropical vegetation in Malaysia and Indonesia is more dense then in Thailand because the latter is a bit less humid. Even the soil is very different. The vegetable grown in Thailand is a bit more "sweeter" and less rough then the one in Malaysia or Indonesia.

Hello, dear Bulent,
Wow! I see you can get good doze of the snow on March. We have got similar landscape from late November till late March. Craig said he is a fan of the winter, but I prefer more warm climate and more colourful nature.
Best wishes from rainy Ural,
